Recently, there has been a nation-wide debate over maladjustment issues of the adolescents in schools. The approaches to the issue range from personal level to the students’ family backgrounds as well as their learning viewpoints, although to solve maladjustment issue of the adolescents, many researchers feel the necessity to call for a user-centered education approach. This signifies that the school education should go beyond the perfunctory programs only to acquire an academic degree, and further should promote self-search of the students and meet their goals and talents. For this reason, there is a necessity of developing measures for the betterment of regular and alternative schools. There have been existing researches which had solely focused on the regular schools’ measures of improving the learning environment. However, relatively, the research on the students’ satisfaction of the learning environment of the alternative schools is neither specific nor systematic. Especially, the state of the students’ level of satisfaction on learning environment in regular and alternative schools are not presented with enough specificity. Therefore, this study examines the difference of specific learning environments in the regular school as well as the alternative school and satisfaction of education among students. Thus, this study investigates the perception of the students about their learning environments and closely looks at the problems of such environments to revitalize the future learning experience of the regular and alternative schools. The purpose of the study is to analyze the present and actual condition of the high school-level of both regular and alternative schools, measuring precise understanding of the students’ current learning environments, management systems and their limitations. To achieve the purpose of the study, the research questions regarding the level of satisfaction of students in the regular school and the alternative school are as follows: 1. How does the psychosocial environment (attitudes of the teachers, friendships, qualifications of the teachers, and safety of both in and out of schools) differ between the regular and alternative schools? 2. How do the activities of teaching and learning (ambience of the class, adequacy of the activities, adequacy of the student evaluation, and motivation) differ between the regular and the alternative schools? 3. How do the extracurricular activities (both academic and personal activities outside of the class, career guide) differ between the regular and the alternative schools? 4. How does the management system (students’ welfare and quality of the facilities, including students in decision making process, adequacy of disciplinary action and rules) differ between the regular and the alternative schools? 5. How do the academic results (basic skills and developing life skills) differ between the regular and the alternative schools? 6. How do the learning environment of the regular and the alternative schools affect academic results? To identify such questions, this study selects the psychosocial environment (attitudes of the teachers, friendships, qualifications of the teachers, and safety of both in and out of schools), the activities of teaching and learning (ambience of the class, adequacy of the activities, adequacy of the student evaluation, and promoting motivation), the extracurricular activities, career guide, management system (students’ welfare and quality of the facilities, including students in decision making process, adequacy of disciplinary action and rules) as independent variables, and selects students’ level of satisfaction on education as an dependent variable. The research was conducted in 15 regular high schools and 15 alternative high schools. To process the statistics, SAS 9.3 program was used, while using Frequency Analysis and Descriptive Analysis to explore the characteristics of the sample group. Also, Cronbach’s Alpha was used to measure the conformity of the degree of the survey questions for reliability analysis. Further, T/F examination was used for variance analysis and regression analysis is to be used to analyze the influence factor of the satisfaction of the education. Summarization of the analysis is as follows: First, the satisfaction level of the students from alternative school is greater than that of the regular school in terms of the students’ respect, understanding and support for the teachers’. In terms of the satisfaction of the friendship, alternative school students score higher than the regular school students. In addition, the satisfaction regarding the qualifications of the teachers was greater among alternative school students. However, regular school students are more satisfied with the school security system than the alternative school students. Second, the satisfaction level of the students from alternative school is much higher than that of the regular school in terms of ambience of the class, adequacy of the activities, adequacy of the student evaluation, and promoting motivation. However, the satisfaction of fairness and reliability on the performance assessment in schools is greater among regular school students. Third, the overall satisfaction of the extracurricular activities is greater among the alternative school students. Fourth, academic and career guide receive more satisfaction among alternative school students than that of regular school students. Fifth, the welfare, quality of facilities and participation of students in decision-making process are higher in satisfaction level among alternative school students than the regular school students. Based on the research, policy proposals are as follows: First, the characteristics of alternative school students vary. Therefore, individual student is in need of appropriate learning environment as well as consulting systems. Thus, there should be multi-dimensional approach to one’s learning experience. Second, general alternative schools have educational programs based on students’ individual interest and talent. To achieve their goals, the theory of self-learning method should be emphasized to promote such learning environment. However, for alternative school students, the attitude for self-learning is rarely adequate. Consequently, each school should develop its own program in which the students make their own academic plans and record their learning processes. Third, as seen in the results, regular school students are less satisfied with the career guide that the school is providing than alternative school students. A variety of different career guide programs should be presented to students so that they can broaden their perspectives in choosing their careers. Fourth, the systems which promote each student’s goals and talent were equally absent in both regular and alternative schools. Above all, there is a lack of communication between the student and the administrative staffs as well as each student’s support system, although alternative school students tend to augment their creative expressiveness along with team work skills through a variety of different projects. Fifth, it is perfectly clear that alternative school students’ satisfaction level suggests the direction and the point of view for the future: there should be the support of public finances, material support for safety issues as well as the organization of the social control for the alternative schools. Sixth, alternative school students enroll in school without their clear vision for the future due to various reasons such as maladjustment in schools and mental issues. Rather than the cramming method of teaching, alternative education has a significant benefit of educating students with different methods. It is a great task for alternative schools to develop both academic and career models that fit each student’s needs and potentials.
