The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of environmental print reading ability, knowledge of vocabulary, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness on reading ability and, along with that, clearly determine variables affecting reading ability by verifying mediating effects of letter knowledge and phonological awareness in the effects of environmental print reading ability and knowledge of vocabulary on reading ability. It is to establish a theoretical basis to intervene effectively in guiding young children's reading by finding out the path through the exploration of variables highly related to reading ability. The following questions were set up in this study. 1. What influences do young children's environmental print reading ability, knowledge of vocabulary, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness have on reading ability? 2. How are the mediator effects of letter knowledge and phonological awareness in the influences of young children's environmental print reading ability and knowledge on reading ability? The study was conducted with 217 young children aged 4 in 7 institutes for early childhood education (3 kindergartens and 4 day care centers) with similar scale and local traits located in G city, Jeollabukdo. Measurement tools were selected to find out the relation among environmental print reading ability, knowledge of vocabulary, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness affecting young children's reading ability. Reading ability was measured with a tool used by Jeong Joo Won(2005), and it was composed of meaningful spelling reading and meaningless spelling reading. Environmental print reading ability was measured using a tool developed by Sohn Seung Hee(2012), and it was composed of context task of environmental print, environmental task without colors, environmental task without pictures. Knowledge of vocabulary was measured using a tool developed by Kim Young Tae, Hong Kyung Hoon, Kim Kyung Hee, Jang Hyae Sung, and Lee Joo Yeon(2009), and it was composed of receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary. Letter knowledge was measured with a tool used by Choi Na Ya(2007), and it was composed of consonant names, consonant?vowel sounds, and consonant?vowel composition. Phonological awareness was measured with a tool used by Oh Mi Gyeong(2010), and it was composed of syllable omission task, phoneme omission task, syllable distinction task, and phoneme distinction task. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 Program. The results are as follows. First, it was shown that environmental print reading ability had direct influences on young children's reading ability. Knowledge of vocabulary didn't have direct influences on reading ability, but had indirect influences through letter knowledge and phonological awareness. Both letter knowledge and phonological awareness were shown to have direct influences on young children's reading ability. Second, letter knowledge and phonological awareness were shown to play partial roles as a mediator in the relation between environmental print reading ability and young children's reading ability. Environmental print reading ability had influences on reading ability using letter knowledge and phonological awareness separately as a single mediator as well as using both of them a double mediator. Letter knowledge and phonological awareness were shown to play a part as a whole mediator in the relation between knowledge of vocabulary and young children's reading ability. Knowledge of vocabulary had influences on reading ability using letter knowledge and phonological awareness separately as a single mediator as well as using both of them a double mediator. This study is meaningful in that it explored the relation among internal variables of language development of young children such as environmental print reading ability, knowledge of vocabulary, letter knowledge, phonological awareness and reading ability, illuminated direct and indirect paths through which these variables affected reading ability, testifying mediator effects of letter knowledge and phonological awareness towards reading ability and identified variables affecting reading ability. It is expected to be used as basic materials in composing effective reading guidance programs for young children by providing more effectiveness in conducting methods of reading instruction.
