The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of a writing program based on DIE by Heathcote and process drama by O'Neill on the writing self-efficacy of elementary students. For that purpose, the study developed a process drama-based writing program and applied it to actual classes in elementary school. The study thus set the following research questions: First, what are the application values of process dramas to increase writing self-efficacy? Second, what are process drama-based writing programs to increase writing self-efficacy? Third, what kind of influence do process drama-based writing lessons have on the writing self-efficacy of elementary students? The subjects include 19 fourth graders at S Elementary School in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. Total 30 lessons of process drama-based writing were offered including the ones in the pre- and post-test. As for testing purposes, I-STATistics(Kim Gyeong-seong, Baker, 2009) was used for the pre- and post-test in the experiment group, and the dependent-sample t-test was conducted to examine quantitative differences. Used in the pre- and post-test, the writing self-efficacy inventory consisted of two areas, namely specific and general writing self-efficacy. Specific writing self-efficacy was measured with the writing self-efficacy Inventory developed by Shelletal(1989, 1995, recited in Woo Eun-shil, 2005) and translated and revised by Woo Eun-shil(2005) according to the level of elementary students in South Korea. General writing self-efficacy was measured with the self-efficacy scale developed by Jeong Taek-hee(1987) based on the self-efficacy scale by Sherer & Maddux(1982) and revised by Woo Eun-shil(2005) for the domain of writing. The reliability(Cronbach’s α) of the present study was .89. In addition, the investigator examined students' reactions to the process drama-based writing lessons implemented as part of the study and used them as supplementary data for analysis. The investigator also conducted qualitative analysis of children's lesson logs, interviews with children, and teachers' observation logs of lessons to supplement quantitative analysis. The study discussed the findings of process drama-based writing lessons in relation to the research questions and previous studies as follows: First, the application values of process dramas for increased writing self-efficacy included the followings: process dramas allow students to write with various viewpoints and include their sincerity in their writings by providing them with self-transcendental experiences. In addition, they offer writing purposes and strong motivations to them and inspire them to take interest in writing, thus helping to increase their writing self-efficacy. Second, a process drama-based wiring program was developed to increase writing self-efficacy as follows: the investigator first diagnosed a need for the development of process drama-based writing program and underwent the stages of developing, applying, revising and supplementing a writing program. Finally, process drama-based writing lessons resulted in the meaningful improvement of specific writing self-efficacy in the experiment group(p<0.01) and meaningful differences in activity performance(p<0.05) and experience conquest(p<0.05), two of the subfactors of general writing self-efficacy. Those findings clearly indicate that process drama-based writing instructions can be statistically significant activities to increase the writing self-efficacy of elementary students. Key Words: Process Drama, Writing Self-efficacy, Drama education *A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education.
