Abstract Problems of the age were to be solved through protection services as in-home care or accommodations, providing preference to elders in facilities, and various livelihood assistances. However, as seniors of today are entering the advanced age in mentally healthy condition and the standard of living and educational level of the society at large improved, desire of elderly is becoming diversified as well. Therefore, the necessity of education is being raised to help seniors to spend their senescence more effectively and beneficially. Therefore, this study intended to investigate ways to activate operation of the elderly college by investigating general demands and program of the elderly college in church which is being operated fairly systematically in Korea to identify problems in operating senior colleges and institutional difficulties. The subject of this study consisted of seniors over the age of 60 who are enrolled in 2 senior colleges in Gwangju Metropolitan City, and distributed total 240 copies of questionnaire from Sep 1 to Oct 21 and used 203 copies excluding 37 copies with unfaithful response for this study. The summaries of results of this study are as follows. First, for investigation on general characteristics of research subjects, 81.3% of respondents were women which signifies that majority of senior college was female, and for age distribution, 21.8% was 60~65, 38.4% was 65~70, 17.2% was 71~75, and 10.8% was over 81 years old. For investigation on health condition, 83.3% had higher than normal health condition that it was identified that seniors were in good health condition, and the most difficult problems they had were in the order of health, loss of role, financial difficulty, solitude, and loneliness. Secondly, for investigation on general characteristics of senior college, the purpose of using senior college was in the order of to relieve boredom, to use free time, and to make new friends, motivation of using senior college was in the order of at friends or neighbor’s suggestion, voluntarily, recommendation by employees in senior college, and suggestion by family, hindrance of using senior college was in the order of health and inconvenient transportation, and changes after participating in senior college was in the order of leisure activity, relieved loneliness and a sense of alienation, and mental and physical health. Also, for investigation on whether education in senior college would be helpful in their later years, 92.6% of participants said it is helpful. Thirdly, for investigation on the satisfaction level of the senior college program, the majority of participants were satisfied in general, and for a question on areas that need to be improved, 47.8% of seniors responded to the development of educational program, 40.9% said offering diversion, 8.4% said budget support, and 2.5% answered to the training of experts in senior education and setting up professional counseling office. Also, for investigation on the program preferences, entertainment and hobby was 45.8%, lecture on health was 23.6%, and travel and field trip was 22.2%. This study made the following suggestions based on the results above to activate operation of senior colleges. First, for investigation on hindrance of using senior colleges, 56.7% was health, 23.6% was lecture on health for program preference, and program which is considered necessary in senior college was also lecture on health with 35.5%. Therefore, health improvement program needs to be developed and policy at national level is required to improve health of senior citizens. Secondly, because educational program in senior college has been operated at voluntary service level, there is tendency for instructors in senior colleges not fulfulling their responsibility for lectures or giving their best effort for quality improvement. The government or local government needs to include support for the tuition fee among financial support of senior colleges as a way to promote quality improvement of senior education to train professional instructors by field who can concentrate only on senior education to engage themselves in lecture with self-respect and pride as a professional instructor of senior college. Thirdly, senior education needs to break a pattern of the provider-centered education method of conducting education in standardized format without considering diversity and distinct characteristics of seniors and settle down proudly as a part of lifelong education, and to do that, provider-centered education needs to be converted into the consumer focused education. As shown in of program preferences, of programs considered necessary, and of satisfaction level by educational program, more seniors will participate with great interest when the program is fun and interesting. It would be necessary to make more effort in changing recognition that senior college, a place for acquiring knowledge, is a place for learning new culture, technique, and knowledge comfortably and enjoyably. Senior college needs to be operated in lifelong education aspect for the aging society. To this end, diversification of programs in senior college is important, but it is more important to make it as a base of culture where seniors can relax comfortably without burden and enjoy learning.
