Adolescence is a psychosocially unstable period in which adolescents suffer from various conflicts in behaviors and attitudes. Since middle schoolers especially suffer from severe conflicts, they complain of emotional and behavioral difficulties. In this study middle school girls who belonged to ‘the concerned group’ in their school assessment were treated by sandplay for relieving their anxiety, tension and alleviating conflicts in order to help their appropriate adjustments. The purpose of this study was to explore the change of internal world of girls who suffered from emotional and behavioral difficulties. Analytical psycholoy and sandplay theories were used for this exploration. Turner(2009) suggested four perspectives for understanding sandboxes such as motion themes, spatial themes, affect themes and content themes in sandplay. This study used only content themes in sandplay. The subjects of this study were four girls in the first grade in a middle school. Pre-test, 12 session sandplay program and post-test were held from July 23rd in 2013 to January 6th in 2014. Pre- and post-test were carried out individually and the sandplay was conducted once or twice per week for around eighty minutes according to individual schedule. The processes of sandplay were classified by the initial phase, the intermediate phase and the final phase of therapy according to content themes in the sandboxes. For the first client, the initial phase of therapy is 1~6(Time trip), the intermediate phase of therapy is 7~9(Seeking for an inner island), and the final phase of therapy is 10~12(Seeking for a real stone). The client expressed opposites such as work vs play, angel vs devil, goodness vs evil, human clone vs real person. The client showed union of masculinity and femininity by meeting alien and various images of masculine and feminine. Finally the client expressed the pattern of eight points. For the second client, the initial phase of therapy is 1~5(My heart is like cold weather), the intermediate phase of therapy is 6~10(Fallen, sick, and risen), and the final phase of therapy is 11~12(Trophy given to me). With starting weak mind for finding her own identity, she went to strange countries and expressed mermaids. The client showed opposites and made handprint and adequate house which was equipped necessary places. Finally the client gave a present of trophy to her. For the third client, the initial phase of therapy is 1~5(Seeking for oasis), the intermediate phase of therapy 6~10(Difficult trip for climbing with camel), and the final phase of therapy 11~12(Discovering oasis). In the first session the client showed confusion by making mixture of inside and outside of house and crisis by selecting red figures. The client showed handprint, pinocchio, new born baby and primary shapes. Finally she found oasis. For the final client, the initial phase of therapy is 1~3(An island drowning shortly), the intermediate phase of therapy is 4~10(My unknowable mind), and the final phase of therapy is 11~12(A tree growing well for itself). With centering the client showed opposites and celebrated new-born psyche. She was reborn as a fairy. Finally she expressed a phallic tree and warm heart for indicating the union of masculinity and femininity. This study showed psychological phenomenon in the sandplay in four middle school students who belonged to ‘the concerned group’ such as opposites, the union of masculinity and femininity. They finally found their own identity which was their developmental task as adolescents. Since post tests and counselling objects showed positive changes, this study revealed the effectiveness of sandplay therapy for transforming their psyche.
