This study set out to examine the knowledge, stress, and educational needs of general ward nurses with regard to home ventilators and investigate connections among them, thus providing basic data for the education of general ward nurses and helping to offer quality nursing service to patients on a home ventilator. It thus presented a descriptive research survey on relations among the knowledge, stress, and educational needs of general ward nurses regarding a home ventilator. The subjects include nurses that were working at general hospitals with 300 beds or more in D Metropolitan City and C City and had an experience of taking care of patients on a home ventilator in the wards of pulmonology, neurosurgery and rehabilitative medicine where they commonly used a home ventilator. Data were collected on August 20~October 30, 2015. Stress related to a home ventilator was measured with a scale developed by the investigator, and knowledge and educational needs related to one were measured with the inventory developed by Jo Su-hyeon et al.(2012). Collected data were analyzed in frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients with the SPSS Win 21.0 program. The findings were as follows: 1. The subjects scored mean 2.26 points out of 4 on knowledge on home ventilators. Of its four subareas, management of emergency situations was the lowest in scores. Of its items, the subjects scored the lowest points on management of backup power and management of mechanical ventilator circuits in the order. 2. The nurses scored mean 3.78 points out of five on stress on home ventilators. Of its four subareas, their stress was the highest in the work burden, which was followed by education and materials, psychological burden, and roles in the order. 3. The subjects scored mean 3.37 points out of 4 on educational needs on home ventilators. Of its four subareas, their scores were high in the understanding of the ventilator and the maintenance of patients' respiratory functions. Of its items, the nurses scored the highest points in the operation of mechanical ventilators, which was followed by change of mechanical ventilator setting, current mechanical ventilator setting, causes of alarm situations, and management of alarm in the order. 4. The study analyzed differences in the knowledge, stress, and educational needs of the subjects related to a home ventilator according to their general characteristics and found differences in their knowledge, stress, and educational needs related to a home ventilator according to their satisfaction with education about home ventilators. There were significant differences in their knowledge according to educational background, experience of using a hospital ventilator, and experience of education about home ventilators. Statistically significant differences were found in their educational needs according to age, religion, clinical experience, and number of educational sessions. 5. The study looked into correlations among the knowledge, stress, and educational needs of the subjects related to a home ventilator and found negative correlations between their knowledge and stress and positive correlations between their stress and educational needs. Lower knowledge led to higher stress, which in turn led to higher educational needs. The findings raise a need to help general ward nurses increase their knowledge about a home ventilator and provide them with education according to the priority of educational needs surveyed so that they will suffer less stress regarding home ventilators.
