This study characterized food-related lifestyles of one-person households and investigated home meal replacement (HMR) consumption behavior and selection attributes by their food-related lifestyles. A survey was conducted with a total of 600 subjects, aged 20 to 59, who had purchased HMR in the last month. One-person households’ food-related lifestyles, HMR purchase motivation, and HMR selection attributes were examined by factor analysis. Six factors were identified and named as ‘taste oriented’, ‘health oriented’, ‘information oriented’, ‘economy oriented’, ‘confidence oriented’, and ‘convenience oriented’ based on the factor meaning. Regarding HMR purchase motivation, four factors were identified and named ‘convenience’, ‘taste’, ‘quality’, and ‘price’. Four factors identified as HMR selection attributes were named ‘trend’, ‘quality’, ‘convenience’, and ‘economy’. Cluster analysis based on food-related lifestyle classified three groups (p < 0.001). The first group was named ‘convenience oriented’ because they preferred convenient food products with lower prices. The second group was named ‘well-being oriented’ because they were interested in their own health. The last group was named ‘trend oriented’ because they obtained food-related information from the Internet or social network services. HMR purchase intentions were different among the groups. The ‘convenience oriented’ group tended to be motivated by HMR product convenience and price. The ‘well-being oriented’ group tended to be motivated by convenience, whereas the ‘trend oriented’ group tended to be motivated by HMR product taste and quality. In addition, the three groups showed differences in HMR selection attributes. When choosing HMR products, the ‘convenience oriented’ group considered convenience and cost-benefit more important. On the other hand, the ‘well-being oriented’ and ‘trend oriented’ groups considered quality and trend more important, respectively. There were differences in demographic characteristics and HMR consumption behavior among the groups. Compared to the other groups, the percentage of 20’s and of unmarried people was higher in the ‘convenience oriented’ group. Additionally, the education level of this group was lower than other groups. The average income of the ‘convenience oriented’ group was lowest and they regarded their economic status more negatively than the other groups. On average, they spent 21,000 won weekly on HMR. They reported that they frequently purchased ready-to-heat (RTH) and ready-to-eat (RTE), which are relatively convenient to use. They highly demanded large-sized HMR packages. Alternatively, the ‘well-being oriented’ group comprised a large percentage of 40’s and 50’s and of married people. They purchased HMR less frequently, and they spent an average of 17,000 won weekly on HMR. They preferred to purchase ready-to-end-cook (RTEC) and ready-to-cook (RTC), which are relatively complicated to prepare. The ‘trend oriented’ group showed an even distribution of age groups, with a high percentage of people with higher education levels. Their average monthly income was the highest among all groups. On average, they spent 28,000 won weekly on HMR. They had a high demand for small-sized HMR packages. Overall, the findings of this study showed that one-person households can be segmented by their food-related lifestyle. Each group has differentiated characteristics in HMR purchasing behavior including demographic characteristics. The results could be useful data in developing competitive HMR products and devising marketing strategies for one-person households.
