The purpose of this research is to determine the effects of collaboration work centered group art therapy on emotional intelligence and social skill of children. As the subjects of the research, I selected 14 children who had difficulty in emotional intelligence and social skill coming after-school in H elementary school in S city. 7 children were grouped as the experiment group and the other 7 children were grouped as the control group to determine the effects of collaboration work centered group art therapy. A total of 12 sessions were held, and the experiment group had 60 minutes of group art therapy at each session while the controlled group did not. The research tools were Emotional Intelligence Scale for the lower graders of elementary school that by Moon Yong-lin(1996) and Social Skill Rating System(SSRS) for Teachers developed by Gresham and Elliot(1990) translated and modified by Kim Hyang-ji(1997). Also, the Wilcoxon matched pairs signed-ranks test was used through SPSS 18.0 to verify the difference between pre- and post-test results of emotional intelligence and social skill. Furthermore, in the progress of the group art therapy, the subjects' change in emotional intelligence and social skill were analyzed. The findings of this research are the following: firstly, the group art therapy by cooperative activity was effective in improving emotional intelligence of children. After the group art therapy program, there was a statistically meaningful improvement in emotional intelligence(z=-2.37, p<.05). Secondly, the group art therapy by cooperative activity was effective in improving the social skill of children. After the group art therapy program, there was a statistically meaningful improvement in the social skill(z=-2.37, p<.05). Thirdly, as the group art therapy sessions progressed, subjects improved their verbal and non-verbal emotional expression and also enhanced the skills of the making their opinions, accepting others and handling conflict. In addition, subjects showed significant improvement in their skills in cooperation among peer group by experiencing positive interactions like help, compliments and support. To sum it up, the group art therapy by cooperative activity was found to have positive effects on the improvement of emotional intelligence and social skill of children. Accordingly, this study is all significant in that it suggested the group art therapy by cooperative activity that is effective to emotional intelligence and social skill of children that experience a critical period for development of emotion and sociality.
