This is a case study on how disabled young children enter into the peer relations during the free play activities in the inclusive class. It aims to figure out how disabled young children and general young children form relationships based on the period of experiencing the inclusion and the characteristics of the disabilities. It is to provide baseline data to help understanding desirable characteristics of peer relations in the interaction. The followings are the research questions that were selected for the purpose of this study. 1. How is the peer relations of young children with disabilities during the free play activities in the inclusive class based on the period of experiencing the inclusion? 2. How is the peer relations of young children with disabilities during the free play activities in the inclusive class based on the characteristics of the disabilities? Three 5-year-old children with disabilities in K child care center, where the researcher is their teacher, had been observed during the free play activities of the everyday routine, for six months from March to August, 2015. Data was collected by performing semi-structured interviews on general children in regard to how they think about children with disabilities and how much they played with them. Collected data was analyzed through the cyclical process of the open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The research result is summarized as; First of all, peer relations of disabled young children demonstrated that the longer the experience of inclusion during the free play activities, the better the relationship they had with peers, although there were individual differences. Young children with disabilities imitated behaviors of general children and expressed more intimacy to them while playing with them during the inclusion. In addition, general children who experienced the longer inclusion were more open to playing with disabled children than those with the shorter experiences. When studying the peer relations based on the characteristics of the disabilities, a young child with disability who is aggressive and disturbs peers’ activities demonstrated gradual decrease in such behavior problems with helps from peers during the inclusion. A young child with physical disability started to approach to peers actively with increased fitness and self-confidence. Moreover, a young child with disability who used to be able to listen to peers’ stories and play with them, even with lack of social skills, became popular among peers, forming more intimate relationships with them. In this study, the longer the disability inclusion, the more the disabled children tried to imitate behaviors of general children, and the more the general children accepted disabled children as friends. It proves the effect of the inclusive education. Considering its effect, the inclusive education may be provided earlier ― currently, it starts from the class for 3-year-olds. In addition, although the negative interactions of young children with disabilities may jeopardize peer relations, general children accepted such behaviors, and they were unbiased to make friends with children with disabilities in forming peer relations based on characteristics of young children with disabilities. It demonstrates the inclusive education helps fostering the desirable character. In conclusion, this study confirms that the inclusive education is a curriculum that can help both of the disabled and general children through the process of getting to know and care for each other. It is expected to be provided by more educational institutions.
