The purpose of this study is to suggest the standards of the best rest interval while doing 65%-1RM bench press based on the performance ability and physiological variables. While doing bench press with 65% of 1RM, participants were asked to do as many sets as possible for each set of 7 including 6 conditions of rest intervals (30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, and 5 minutes) between the sets. RM (Repetition Maximum), ET (Exercise Time), TW (Total Work), LA (Lactic Acid), HR (Heart Rate), SBP (Systolic Blood Pressure), RPP (Rate Pressure Product) and NRS (Numerical Rating Scale) were measured according to the conditions of the rest intervals between sets. In order to conduct this study, 8 healthy male university students in the age of 20's at C University were selected. Before starting an experiment, 1RM bench press was tested and they participated in the crossing distribution experiments which randomly selected the sequence of exercise according to 6 conditions of the rest intervals (30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, and 5 minutes). The blood lactate density were measured in rest condition and after completing 7 sets of exercise and the performance ability, physiological variables and pain scales were measured in each rest interval while doing 7 sets with maximum repetition. Each experiment was conducted 6 times at intervals of one week. The data was verified with repeated measures Two-way ANOVA and Contrast's repeated method was applied for post-hoc comparison. The results were shown below. First, as the number of repetition, exercise duration, and amount of exercise statistically significantly decreased (p<.001) as the number of sets increased and bigger decline was observed as the rest intervals were shorter.
Second, the blood lactate density showed statistically significant differences (p<.001) according to the rest intervals between sets. The lactate density before and after doing bench press statistically significantly increased (p<.05) and no interaction effect was observed between rest interval and lactate density. Based on the results of post-hoc comparison according to the condition of the rest intervals, there was a significant difference (p<.001) in the condition of 2-min and 3-min rest intervals between sets and the lactate density increased more in long rest intervals than in short rest intervals.
Third, the heart rate just after finishing exercise significantly increased more and more (p<.01) as the number of sets increased in long rest intervals (4 min and 5 min) and the heart rate statistically significantly increased (p<,05) and remained highly as the number of sets increased in short intervals (30 seconds and 1 min).
Fourth, the blood pressure and systolic blood pressure showed statistically significant differences with regard to the condition of rest intervals and the sets.
Fifth, statistically significant differences (p<.001) were observed in the numerical rating scale according to the rest intervals and sets. While it was observed highly in the short rest intervals (30 seconds and 1 mins) than the long rest intervals (4 min and 5 min) in the early set, it increased more in the long rest intervals (4 min and 5 min) in the latter set as the number of sets increased.
Consequently, the maximum of repetition was 20 at 65% of 1RM bench press, exercise duration was from 40 to 43 (seconds), the maximum heart rate just after completing exercise was from 140 to 145/(beats/min), the systolic blood pressure just after completing exercise was from 180∼187(mm/Hg), the blood lactate density was from 6.4∼9.3(mmol), and the numerical rating scale was either 6 or 7. This study concluded that 2 or 3 rest interval is the most effective way between sets at 65% of 1RM bench press.
