The transition to the multicultural society is already a world wide trend. Thus, it is not our own special phenomenon, but it is hard to find the case of transition to the multicultural society as ethical and cultural variety increases in a fast pace like South Korea. First of all, in order to make the multicultural society that is based on the mutual understanding and cooperation rather than the multicultural society that is full of bias and prejudice that triggers conflicts and tension, it is essential for the citizens who take up the major part in the society to have an open mind and attitude that admits and accepts
variety.
While teenagers experience radical physical, psychological, and social change, the desire to attempt various activities to form their ego identity increases. In this period, it is an important issue for the educational world, as well as our society and government to raise a wide understanding and the right accommodation attitude toward the multicultural society. Therefore, it is necessary to look over in general what notion and recognition of teenagers have toward multiculturual society in order to have an effective multicultural education of teenagers.
Thus, the experiment was set to find out the recognition that teenagers have toward multicultural society and individual background factors that influence these recognition by conducting a survey of teenagers that classifies the recognition for multiculture into cognitive, emotional, and behavioral area. In addition, the purpose was intended to provide basic information in setting the direction of the multicultural education to help the understanding of social integration and adaptation of our teenagers.
A survey was conducted and the questionnaire was circulated to the middle and high school students who live in par of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. In regard of the content of the survey, objective questionnaire was selected based on the previous experiments, and the multicultural attitude scale(MASQUE; Munroe, & Pearson, 2006) was modified and supplemented to apply to the Korean teenagers by reorganizing to fit in the purpose of the experiment. The documents of the completed survey was collected and analyzed by statistical procedure and drew the main results as followed:
First, cognitive area was higher than the emotional and behavioral area in terms of recognition for multiculture, and through the fact that the behavioral area was the lowest, we can tell that while teenagers have a perception of irrationality toward the discrimination and inequality of our society based on the social, economical status and even have emotional resistance. However they showed passive attitudes in getting interest especially in other culture or a minority group and also in the behavioral area which responds actively to their disadvantage.
Second, looking at the difference of recognition for multiculture according to individual variable, girls was higher than the boys in the emotional and behavioral area, and according to the grades, high school were comparatively high. More than 40 hours volunteer work and experience of class with multicultural students had a meaningful effect on the recognition for multiculture. It is shown that meaningful contact with other culture or people from other culture more than experience of simple travel can give more influence in recognition for multiculture. It showed that sex, grades, experience of class with multicultural students and volunteer work give more influence in recognition for multiculture.
Third, we must expand the recognition for multiculture from the concept of consultation that centers on immigrants and foreign workers to the concept of broad sense that covers social and economic status, sex, religion, and individual identity etc., and expand the area and content of understanding education on multiculture to get rid of stereotype, prejudice and social discrimination toward the minority of our society. It should be specific and practice-oriented, and through developing interchange activity to achieve experience-centered learning instead of theoretical learning, multicultural education should be the education that aims multicultural society that respects and understands each other
