This study aims to investigate how to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of governmental policy supports and services for unmarried child rearing mothers by reviewing the factors that affect parenting efficacy of them. Key variables consist of independent variables and control variables. The independent variables are such as self-esteem, depression, parenting stress, social networks and social support. The control variable is socio-demographic characteristics. The subject of study were 229 unmarried child rearing mothers who have experienced public services. For data analysis, t-test and ANOVA were carried out using SPSS WIN 18.0 to determine differences between groups and to analyse frequency. An analysis on the correlation between variables and multiple regression analysis were taken too. The results are as follows.
First, the mean age of the analysis group was 28.34 years. The majority which was 58.1% of the group were unmarried child rearing mothers with age between 21 and 30 years. 80.7% of the group had more than high school education level, 46.7% with no religion and 52.9% with no job. 24.5% of the group did not have any monthly income and 44.6% had monthly income between 600 thousand and 1.2 million won. 56.7% of the group had children of less than 24 months old. This reveals that the age of unmarried child rearing mothers are rising and their education level is getting higher.
Second, cross-analysis of housing types according to socio-demographic variables showed that the proportion of single mothers at social welfare facilities and at home, respectively, accounts for 93.7% and 90.3%. 78.1% of unmarried child rearing mothers at the facilities and 81.8 % of those at home had high school diploma or higher. 21.9% of unmarried mothers at facilities had less than high school dropout, which were more than those at home. Teenage single mothers turned out to parent more at facilities. 52.8% of unmarried child rearing mothers at home and 32.8% of those at facilities had religions. 32.8% of those at facilities had no income and 24.2% of single mothers at home had monthly income between 600 thousand – 900 thousand won. This means that financial status of them are poor. 71.9% of unmarried child rearing mothers at facilities and 50.9% of those at home had children of less than 24 months old. Mothers with children of less month ages tended to parent more at facilities.
Third, average of self-esteem level, the independent variable turned out to be 2.80, depression as 2.42 and parenting stress as 2.46. 84.7% of the group had no social intercourse with their children’s fathers. The most common social network was public service. 58.5 % of the group relied on it. It was followed by family (29.3%) and friends (24.5%). The average of the specific, emotional and informational support was found to be 1.52. This means that there is almost no social support considering that 1 point counts ‘little’, 2 points 'occasional' and 3 points "almost always".
Fourth, the differences of independent variables between the groups according to socio-demographic factors being reviewed, significant distinctions in self-esteem level as a personal factor were observed depending on residential types of unmarried parenting mothers. Single mothers parenting at home had higher level of self-esteem than those at facilities. Depression showed significant differences according to children's age. Mothers with children of over 37 months old had high level of depression while those with children of less than 12 months old had relatively low depression. Parenting stress appears to have correlation with religious status and the age of their children. High level of parenting stress were observed from unmarried parenting mothers with no religion and with children of more month ages. Social networks, one of social factors had significant difference depending on the housing type. Unmarried mothers parenting in facilities had more social networks than those at home. Social support had a correlation with children’s month age. The lower the age of the children were, the more the social supports were shown.
Fifth, analysis on the correlation between key variables and parenting efficacy showed that self-esteem, depression, parenting stress, social networks, social support factors played significant roles in the statistics. The self-esteem is low depression, parenting stress, lower, more social networks, the higher the social support, parenting efficacy was higher. Depression is a higher parenting stress, fewer social networks, the lower the social support, parenting efficacy was lower. The higher the social support and social networks are higher in parenting efficacy. The higher the social support, parenting efficacy was high. In summary, higher self-esteem level, lower depression, less parenting stress, more social networks and more social supports led to higher parenting efficacy. Sixth, multiple regression analysis on factors showed that housing types, personal factors such as self-esteem and parenting stress of unmarried child rearing mothers had significant impacts on parenting efficacy. Unmarried mothers parenting at facilities had higher parenting efficacy. Higher self-esteem level was found to affect parenting efficacy and the unmarried mothers parenting at home had higher self-esteem level. Parenting stress was a factor influencing the parenting efficacy, too. Single mothers with religion and with children of less month ages had less parenting stress.
In conclusion, critical factors affecting the parenting efficacy for unmarried child rearing mothers are housing types as a socio-demographic factor as well as self-esteem level and parenting stress as personal factors of independent variables. Unmarried mothers parenting at facilities could get social supports without difficulties, which seems to have led them to have higher parenting efficacy. This would help to review the stat
