A museum is no longer a place that forces its authoritative interpretations about objects. People visit the museum to create their own individual meanings based on experience and interpretation and the museum serves as a place for communication that forms new cultural discourses. Such shift of perspective on the museum has changed the paradigm of museum education. The aim of museum education has become the one that fosters students to have refinement as meaning makers who appreciate artworks, create new meanings and share them with other audiences. Audio guides can also serve as supplementary texts as one of the various educational resources that the museum provides to facilitate meaning making by young audiences. However, most of the existing audio guides that museums in Korea offer to their audiences are not the ones developed for children and even if there are some of guides especially for children, they just provide one-sided information which is far from functions to foster them to develop knowledge as meaning makers. This study started from the awareness of such problems and was intended to seek for contents and compositions of audio guides as educational means to facilitate young audiences in making their own meanings. In order to achieve this, the study investigated characteristics and limitations of audio guides as educational means based on literature researches and reviewed previous theories of appreciation education as part of meaning making. In addition, the study also analyzed examples of audio guides in other countries developed for children to categorize content elements, explanatory styles and scripts used for such devices and draw various strategies to facilitate meaning making. Lastly, the study suggested examples of scripts by devising stages to prepare generalized scripts of audio guides for children and a model for such preparation. Content elements from case analysis of audio guides in other countries include styles, details, methods and contexts of expressions in artworks and those categories were classified into subcategories covering formative elements, formative principles, materials, techniques, themes and subjects, narratives, artists, and art history and sociocultural contexts. Content elements in audio guides for children serve as interactive texts for the artworks and this enables children to form their meanings with relations of connection among texts inside the artworks, facilitates their meaning making among different texts and helps them to understand experiences and background information in connection with the artworks. Explanatory methods from case analysis include review of content elements, formation of fine art knowledge, creation of personal meanings and auditory effects. Review of content elements is classified into inducement of perspectives and offering of information whereas formation of fine art knowledge is divided into whether or not to introduce detailed concepts of fine art. Subcategories of creation of personal meanings include recalling experiences, taking specific actions, modeling reactions, imagining and recalling one’s own expressions while auditory effects cover whether they are used as either background music or sound effect. This kind of explanatory strategies allows children to focus their attentions and facilitate their utilization of preliminary experience and background knowledge so that they can extend their appreciation experience to personal meanings. Scripts included in audio guides for children were classified into artworks, perspectives for interpretation, relations among different artworks and questions on appreciation. Scripts included in audio guides do not assume immediate interactions unlike the ones used in museum education programs or fine art classes. So they can extend thinking and serve as an educational stimulation that induce students to carefully appreciate artworks. A model for scripts devised to be used in audio guides for children by combining content elements, explanatory methods and scripts drawn from case analysis have 3 stages. Such stages are based on general sequences and therefore such sequences may change depending on compositions. The first stage is for review of content elements. At this stage, a strategy to induce perspectives to carefully review internal elements of artworks or themed scripts are used. In addition, it may suggest external information about artworks such as contexts related to them. The second stage is for formation of fine art knowledge. During this stage, characteristics about artworks found at the first stage are inductively related to fine art concepts. At this time, professional terms may be introduced or explanatory terms to meet the knowledge level of children can be used. The third stage is for creation of personal meanings. This stage uses various strategies to personalize appreciations. Recalling experience or taking specific actions may help children to create new meanings. Further, as the stage suggests reactions from others to children who are not fully experienced in appreciation, a reaction modeling strategy can be used to offer them improved formation of reactions. The strategy to create personal meanings is applicable to overall scripts but the main focus is on suggesting questions requiring children to think over in depth at the last moment of the scripts or induce them to establish their own personal reactions. Audio guides for children that facilitate them to create their own meanings help those young audiences to enjoy educational experience in museums of art without restrictions on time and space. Appreciating artworks while listening to audio guides, children can learn how to appreciate artworks. When they grow old, they can appreciate artworks in connection with various texts. In addition, museums can also escape from their existing stereotype of closed and authoritative places that force their own meanings and change into places of personal reasoning. Audio guides that facilitate children to create personal meanings let them learn there is no ‘answer’ in museums of art. During the course of this, young audiences recognize that various thoughts inspired from artworks are accepted and perceive that museums are places where new meanings are created. Audio guides are no longer the ones that deliver one-sided interpretations. Children visiting museums of art can spend as long as they want in front of their favorite artworks, facilitate their own experience and background knowledge and create their own meanings in connection with artworks. Audio guides can serve as an instructional scaffolding that makes such things happen.
