This study aimed to understand teachers' perception of music education activities for infants in nurseries and examine the actual state of music education activities. The results of the study would provide basic information to help planning and operating music education activities for infants in field. The specific research questions were as follows:
1. How is different on teachers' perception of music education activities for infants according to teachers' background variables? 2. How is different on teachers' operation of music education activities for infants according to teachers' background variables?
198 homeroom teachers of infant class participated in this study, working for National·public nurseries, private nurseries, home nurseries, and workplace nurseries located in D city. The questionnaire by Soo-Jin Son(2011) was used to examine music educational activities for infants. The frequency and percentage were calculated for data analysis.
The research results were as follows: The first part of the results was teachers' perception of the music education activities. The teachers recognized the goal of music education activities as 'providing with opportunities for sensuous experiences'. They thought that such music activities were helpful for whole-man development. For effective music education activities, 'independence of the melody area' and 'integrated planning of play with music' were considered as necessary. The most frequent activity was 'singing'. As a method of teacher education and training, 'teachers' knowledge on infants' musical development' was most needed. They wanted to have teacher education and training through 'workshop on infant music education' and ‘audio-visual education' by professors who majored 'early childhood education' equipped with music knowledge. They thought that it was the most important for effective music education activities to 'develop and distribute various infnat books and materials. The second part of the results was about current state of the operation of music education activities for infants in nurseries. The goal of music appreciation activity was to 'induce infants' interest' and to 'induce various expressions'; the goal of physical expression was to 'promote interest' and to 'develop large and small muscles'; and the goal of musical instrument investigation was 'interest satisfaction', and to 'motivate musical interest'. Dynamic, speed, rhythm, melody, tone, harmony, and form as basic elements of mucis composition were taught in sequence as more than average. The music environment was composed in the interest area of the classroom; the concept of the current standard childcare curriculum was understood well by teachers; and the planned infant music education activities were accomplished according to standard childcare curriculum. The lesson plan was written by the homeroom teachers and actual activities were agreed with the weekly education plan. 2-3 times of music education activities were planned, and the time that music education took during the day was 'nromal'.
