The global number of SNS(Social Network Service) users are increasing annually. SNS has value of communication, openness, and sharing, enabling users to establish social network via interactions on online in which the limitation of space and time is overcome. Also, on-time and realistic information can be produced and distributed through the SNS. Thus, SNS is gaining limelight as the new media in digital era. For self-expression and interaction among users on SNS, each user discloses one’s personal information in the form of profile. The disclosure involves one’s lifelog, interest, and various information which is generated, collected and shared by the user. The opened information and usage log can also be easily viewed, collected, and shared by other users. Although the user discloses his/her information by one’s own will, exercising full control on the information(how, when, to what extent the information will be revealed) proves difficult. This could result in privacy intrusion among users, pervasion of inaccurate information, and abuse of private information, all of which are showing notable severity. These problematic phenomena are frequently occurring as SNS usage has become pervasive, in more grave manner. Based on the problem, this research aims to discover motivation of privacy intrusion by the theory of planned behavior and motivation theory. Factors as attitude toward privacy intrusion on SNS, subjective norm, and self-control are derived from the theory of planned behavior, while the factors as experience of privacy intrusion, perceived enjoyment, perceived punishment, and response cost are derived from the motivation theory. Quantitative analysis has been performed to elucidate the way the factors affecting intention of privacy intrusion with samples of 220 SNS users in their 10∼30s. The followings are the result of Smart PLS analysis of 202 valid answers from online survey:
First, intention to punish the users committed misdeeds on SNS is positively associated with the intention to punish the wrongdoing by committing privacy intrusion. Also, the experience of punishing on SNS is positively associated with the attitude toward privacy intrusion. Second, the experience of intruding other's privacy on SNS is associated with the attitude toward privacy intrusion. Third, the attitude toward privacy intrusion and subjective norm are associated with the intention of privacy intrusion. Forth, self-control and perceived punishment are negatively associated with privacy intrusion on SNS. Fifth, perceived enjoyment is positively associated with the intention of privacy intrusion. Sixth, response cost is negatively associated with the intention of privacy intrusion.
