The paper aims to examine the effects of social support and self-esteem perceived by the unemployed on depression, including the mediate role of self-esteem between social support and depression.
The research problems prescribed in this study are as follows:
A hypothetical research model devised for the purpose of this study is as shown in and the following hypotheses are set for the detailed research problems: Research Problem 1) There are differences in social support, self-esteem, and depression depending on the demographic nature of the unemployed. Research Problem 2) There is a correlation among social support perceived by the unemployed, self-esteem, and depression, and they will have a reciprocal influence. Research Problem 3) Social support and self-esteem perceived by the unemployed will affect depression. Research Problem 4) Self-esteem perceived by the unemployed will play an mediate role between social support and depression. The subjects of the research are the unemployed between the ages of 20 and 65. We conducted an investigation by conducting 30 copies of preliminary surveys and used 282 copies as final analysis data. To analyze the research problems, we performed descriptive statistical analysis, reliability analysis, the Pearson correlation analysis, T-test and ANOVA by using SAS9.2 and SPSS 20.0 programs. Moreover, we carried out simple and multiple regression analysis as well as mediation validation in accordance with the verification step of Baron and Kenny (1986) and performed the Sobel test. Our research details can be summarized and concluded as follows: First, the differences in social support, self-esteem, and depression according to the demographic nature were significantly different depending on monthly average income before unemployment, debt after unemployment, the duration of unemployment, reasons for unemployment, changes in the economic status after unemployment, and the type of occupations before unemployment. These results suggest that each unemployed at the time of unemployment and after unemployment are affected by unemployment situation, especially the economic condition. On the other hand, except for the significant part of social support in the form of gender and the types of residence, marital status of self-esteem, and the significance in the form of residence, there was no significant difference in social support, self-esteem, and depression according to age groups, the number of economically active population, the number of dependents, academic ability, social support, self-esteem, and depression. Second, social support showed a positive correlation with self-esteem and negatively correlated with depression according to correlation analysis. In addition, self-esteem demonstrated a negative correlation with depression. Third, social support and self-esteem of the unemployed had a significant effect on depression according to simple and multiple regression analyses. The results suggest that the higher the social support and self-esteem perceived by the unemployed, the lower the depression. Fourth, the intermediation effect of self-esteem was verified in the relationship between social support and depression of the unemployed. Self-esteem has strong explanatory power as a major mediate variable that predicts depression and it demonstrated partial mediation effects as social support has a stronger indirect effect than a direct effect on depression, which shows a partial mediate effect. That is, the higher the social support, the lower the depression, and social support has more influence on depression when mediated through self-esteem. In order to increase self-esteem that plays an mediate role, a measure to increase social support is necessary before anything else. To raise social support perceived by the unemployed, affection and support from the family, friends, and neighbors are needed as well as continuous education, care, and encouragement by the government and related organizations. It is also important to provide material support, e.g. unemployment measures, training and education for re-employment, and unemployment benefits to support basic living standards. Nevertheless, we need various programs that tackle with psychological and emotional wounds caused by unemployment, thereby boosting social support and self-esteem while reducing depression. We believe the study is significant in that it reveals the effect of an mediate role of self-esteem between social support and depression, and we hope the study will be used as the basic data for unemployment policy, career, and counseling.
