In this study, we selected three variables to be affecting the early childhood teachers’ mathematics teaching efficacy: mathematical attitude, pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, and constructivist belief. Specifically, our study investigated (1) if there are significant correlations between mathematical attitude, pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, constructivist belief and mathematics teaching efficacy, (2) how about the relative effects of mathematical attitude, pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, and constructivist belief on mathematics teaching efficacy, (3) if the pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics mediates the effect of constructivist belief on mathematics teaching efficacy, (4) if the pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics moderates the effect of mathematical attitude on mathematics teaching efficacy. To explore the effect of early childhood teachers’ mathematical attitude, pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, and constructivist belief on their mathematics teaching efficacy, we randomly sampled 467 early childhood teachers who work at childcare centers and kindergartens in Seoul, Kyunggi and Kangwon and collected their responses by questionnaires. Mathematics teaching efficacy was measured with mathematics teaching efficacy scale for early childhood teachers developed by Luo (2000) and translated by Jung (2001a). Mathematical attitude was measured with Smith (2000)’s scale which we translated for this study. To measure the pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, we revised Hong (2012)’s scale to be applicable for early childhood teachers. Constructivist belief was measured with constructivist teacher belief subscale in Lim (2007)’s scale which was developed based on Hart et al. (1990)’s scale. Responses were analyzed by frequencies, percentages, mean, standard deviation, reliability test, Pearson’s correlations, simple regressions and multiple regressions using IBM SPSS 21.0. Study results are as follows. Firstly, early childhood teachers’ mathematical attitude, pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, and constructivist belief were positively correlated with their mathematics teaching efficacy. That is, early childhood teachers who have high level of mathematics teaching efficacy showed high level of mathematical attitude, pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, and constructivist belief as well. Secondly, mathematical attitude demonstrated the largest explanatory power on the variance of mathematics teaching efficacy, followed by pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics and constructivist belief. For teachers of 3-5 year-olds, mathematical attitude showed the largest effect and next came pedagogical content knowledge; for teachers of 0-2 year-olds, mathematical attitude topped the list, followed by pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics and constructivist belief. Thirdly, early childhood teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics partly mediated the effect of constructivist belief on mathematics teaching efficacy. For teachers of 3-5 year-olds, pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics fully mediated the effect while it partly did for teachers of 0-2 year-olds. Lastly, early childhood teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge moderated the relation between mathematical attitude and mathematics teaching efficacy. That is, if the teacher has high level of pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, the positive effect of mathematical attitude on mathematics teaching efficacy was even more enhanced. This study extended the previous literature which has been largely focused on teachers of 3-5 year-olds, by embracing teachers of 0-2 year-olds teachers thus providing research data on teachers of 0-2 year-olds mathematics teaching efficacy and the relevant factors which could improve it. Also, it showed that factors which affect early childhood teacher’s mathematics teaching efficacy may vary according to the age of children he or she takes charge of. The mediating and moderating effects of pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics proved in our study provide meaningful information for teacher education, especially regarding the improvement of mathematics teaching efficacy. Ultimately, early childhood teachers’ enhanced teaching efficacy in mathematics would contribute to the better mathematical experience of infants and young children.
