The purpose of this study is to explore and understand what the professional identify is, what the professional development is like, and what factors influence such a process, in family counselors. The specific research questions are ‘What is the professional identity in family counselors?,’ ‘What is the professional development in family counselors?,’ and ‘What factors influence the professional identity development in family counselors?’ To achieve the purpose of this study, this study collected data through in-depth interview with fifteen (15) family counselors based on grounded theory approach (grounded theory approach), one of the qualitative research methods. Major research findings can be summarized as follows. 176 concepts were drawn through open coding, again classified into 47 categories and finally into 18 subcategories. Paradigm model was completed by analyzing the relation of categories, using axial coding. As a result of analyzing the interconnectedness between categories, the central phenomenon of ‘I desire to grow as a professional family counselor’ was discovered due to the causal condition of ‘continued concern about family counseling.’ Research participants performed action/interaction strategies which were ‘immersion in family counseling’, ‘holding external qualifications’, ‘attempting to have a mature relationship’, ‘self- caring’, ‘self-reflection’, and ‘continuing to study’ in the contexts of ‘individual characteristics and original family experience’, ‘presence of counseling community culture’, and ‘social expectation and demand.’ The intervening conditions that either promote or subdue the action/interaction with central phenomenon include ‘having a motive for family counselor’ from individual and family area, ‘being reassured by strong support system’ from interpersonal relationship area, and ‘experiencing competence as family counselor’ and ‘evaluating family counseling occupation’ from vocational area. Ensued subsequent consequences appeared as ‘equipping professionalism in family counseling’, ‘growing in personal and vocational area’, and ‘forming a new professional identity.’ Through selective coding, ‘growing as an expert in family counseling through constant exertions for growth’ appeared as core category. Through this process, the types of professional development in family counselors were classified into job pursuit type, self achievement type, self understanding type, and volunteering type. Such difference in types stems from the difference in the motive for family counselor and the area of interest. Through process analysis, family counselors’ professional development could be divided into three steps with the course of time: immersion step, self-understanding and acceptance step, and integration step. Based on this, the hypothetical relations in four areas: personal area, family area, interpersonal area, and vocational area were summarized in statements. This study has limitations in that research participants’ region, family counseling experience, academic background, and level of working condition are rather biased, the study was conducted in rather short-term viewpoint in understanding the development of family counselor and did not consider counseling environment and legal and institutional situations. Nevertheless, it is significant in that it attempted to establish a theory to explain the professional identity and development and the influence factors shown in family counselors. It also provides those who hope to grow as expert in family counseling with long-term visions and implications for family counselor training and supervision. In this study, the suggestions on the tasks to check and solve the factors to improve and support for establishing family counselors’ professional identity by highlighting the family counselor’s own identify that is different from other counselors are expected to be used as primary data for preparing laws and regulations related to family counseling in the future.
