Objective
This study aimed to identify the effects for stroke survivors of time-use intervention on self-efficacy and on the six factors influencing occupational participation based on the model of human screening tool (MOHOST).
Method The participants included 30 stroke survivors who receive in-patient occupational, selected with a consecutive sampling method. Using a randomized, controlled design, we analyzed perceived unproductive time during the day and participant activities with the Occupational Questionnaire and employed it in the time-use intervention. In addition, we utilized the MOHOST and the Korean version of the General Self-efficacy Scale to examine the effects of treatment at baseline and 10 weeks posttest.
Results The treatment group participants increased their self-control, self-efficacy, and self-competence as well as total MOHOST scores more than did the control group (p < .05). In before-and-after treatment comparisons of each group, all the factors except for motor skills and communication/interaction skills increased for occupational participation in the experimental group, whereas one more subscale (i.e., environment) scores did not improve in the control group. Scores from the general self-efficacy scale and the MOHOST subscales showed varying relationship levels, in particular, a moderate relationship with motivation for occupation (p< .05, r = .416), patterns of occupation(p< .05, r = .506), and environment (p < .05, r = .416). Conclusion The findings from this study suggest the utility of time-use guided by an occupation-focused model and measures that shares coherent, theoretical underpinnings of occupational participation. We found such approaches could be effective in facilitating client-centered practice utilizing various activities addressing individual needs and in examining areas of goal setting and outcomes for stroke survivors.
