The purpose of this research is to collect basic information that is needed to a) encourage elementary school homeroom teachers to understand the potential of intimate open communications between them and their students in classroom environments and thereby b) develop optimal communication methods to boost students' happiness level by measuring meaningful differences of students' happiness levels depending on the degree of open communications of their homeroom teachers. Three issues were investigated for this research: a) how high/low is the level of open communications perceived by students that take place between them and their homeroom teacher, b) how much do students feel fulfilled or happy, and c) how much does the level of open communications perceived by students constitute to their happiness. To compile data, survey sheets were distributed to students. Elements that determine the level of open communications were designated as a) acceptance (i.e. courteous listening) and b) encouragement (i.e. courteous persuasion to participate), and elements that determine the level of happiness were designated as a) sustaining a fulfilling life, b) exposure to positive emotional experience and c) minimal exposure to negative emotional experience. Two variables, a) homeroom teachers and b) students, were set. The background variable regarding homeroom teachers can be broken down into the following elements - gender, age, teaching experience, class size, and the independent variable regarding students can also be broken down into the following elements - gender, academic achievement levels, engagement levels in classroom activities. A total of eight elementary schools in Seoul were randomly selected and sixth graders from 30 different classes were surveyed. Among collected survey sheets, 624 valid sheets were used for research. The survey took place between 12 - 19 April 2017. The survey results were analyzed by employing the following methods: t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson r correlations analysis and multiple regression analysis were employed to analyze data and process statistics. This research discovered the following three findings. Firstly, elementary school students answered they are satisfied with the level of open communications with their homeroom teachers. Students perceived encouragement (i.e. courteous persuasion to participate) as the first important factor and acceptance (i.e. courteous listening) as the second important factor that ensures open communications. Students' perception of open communications showed meaningful changes depending on the following sub-elements of background variable regarding homeroom teachers: gender, age and class size. Their perception also showed significant differences depending on the following sub-elements of background variable regarding students: academic achievement levels, engagement levels in classroom activities. Secondly, it was discovered that a clear majority of students feel happy. Variables that affect this are as follows, in order of importance: exposure to positive emotional experience, sustaining a fulfilling life, and minimal exposure to negative emotional experience. Meaningful differences were found depending on class size - a sub-element of the background variable regarding homeroom teachers. Similar differences also shown depending on academic achievement levels and engagement levels in classroom activities - sub-elements of the background variable regarding students. Thirdly, a strong correlation was found between homeroom teachers' efforts to engage in open communications and students' happiness. This shows homeroom teachers who are eager to communicate much with his/her students will allow students to be happy in their lives. The findings of this research can be summed down to the following three conclusions. Firstly, homeroom teachers should put utmost effort to a) engage in attentive hearing in an active and positive manner to what students say, b) persuade students to make independent decisions, and c) work on his/her abilities to engage in open communications with students to maximize their happiness. This tells teachers should break away from old-fashioned and deep-rooted teaching methods based on hierarchy and dominance, and rather should try to communicate in ways students will feel most comfortable and actively interact with students. Secondly, the potential of a strong correlation between teachers' inclination to engage in open communications and students' happiness levels should be shared in the education field across the board. This will require developing learning programs for male and older teachers to help them be equipped with qualities that will allow them to effortlessly engage in open communications with their students, and metropolitan and provincial Office of Education should promote such programs. Thirdly, strong policies are deeply needed to eradicate the prevalent negative learning environment of elementary students comparing his/her academic achievements with their peers, which results in these students being immersed in competition. Also, changes in curriculum are needed to design classes that caters to the different academic achievement levels of students. This will encourage students to be motivated by providing them with greater chances to understand his/her weaknesses which will lead them to proactively work on their weaknesses. Additionally, teachers should aggressively invest their energy to create learning environments that guarantee all students to express their opinions and feeling. In this line, it is encouraged for teachers to design various courses that include activity-based learning programs, such as peer work and activities and other activities that require cooperation.
