The purpose of this study is to examine current state of closed schools in Korea and Japan and to analyze types of characteristics of application, which will be utilized for further base data of closed schools in Korea. According to statistic data of the Education Ministry of Korea, 3,678 schools had been closed down, 2,328 schools had sold, and 1,350 schools were kept by local education office by 18th of May 2016. While 933 schools (69.1%) among whole shut down schools kept by local education office are being used as facilities, 417 schools (30.9%) are being neglected unused. Based on the data of National Statistical Office (NSO), the population of children in school age in Korea will gradually be decreased. Therefore, closed schools in Korea will consistently grow in number. Also in Japan, the number of discontinued schools has risen due to urbanization, an aging society and a rapid decrease in population caused by a decline of local industries. According to the data announced by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (文部科学省) in Japan, 6,811 schools was shut down from 2002 to 1st of May 2015. Now, 5,943 school buildings are kept, 4,198 schools (70.6%) of whole closed schools that buildings still exist are being used as facilities, 1,745 schools (29.4%) are being neglected unused. Thus, cases of Korea are analyzed referring 1,350 schools in ‘Date for Excellent Cases of Using Closed Schools’ reported by Korean Educational Development Institute, cases of Japan are analyzed referring ‘Current States of Major Uses of Closed Schools’ announced on 12th of January 2017 and ‘A Report for Actual Condition and Uses of Closed Schools’ studied in 2002 by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (文部科学省) in Japan. This study classifies application types of closed schools in Korea and Japan in five categories with tables and frequency graphs. Two contrasting results are found on facilities for public sports and increasing income through frequency analysis. First of all, While Japan uses 1,015 schools (15.6%) among whole shut down schools as facilities for public sports, Korea uses only 11 schools (0.8%) owned by local education office as facilities for public sports. For various activities and interaction among local residents, Using closed schools actively as facilities for public sports will benefit people as a community place that they use for activities. Secondly, Korea utilizes 234 schools (17,3%) owned by local education office as facilities for increasing income, which is higher rate compared to Japan. Based on frequency analysis of application types, 100 good example schools are selected and introduced. Efficient uses and direction are suggested for unused and neglected schools that have been shut down and will have shut been down in the future. Consistent study and concern for closed schools increasing in number due to a decline of the population of children in school age will be essential on the basis of this study.
