Effects of vitamin A supplementation in late-pregnant cow diets on tissue development and birth traits in Korean native calves원문보기

The objective of this study is to determine effects of vitamin A supplementation in late-pregnant cow diets on tissue development and birth traits in Korean native calves. In study 1, vitamin A supplementation at 24,000 IU/day is supplied to high-vitamin A group (n = 8) from 225-day gestation to delivery. In study 2, pregnant cows treated high-vitamin A (n = 5) consumed vitamin A supplementation at 24,000 IU in period 1 (from 150 to 225 day in gestation). In period 2 (from gestation 225-day to delivery), treatment-diet contained vitamin A supplementation at 78,000 IU/day. As results, serum vitamin A of pregnant cows decreased as the day of delivery approached both in study-1 and -2 (P <0.001). There was no significantly different serum vitamin A of pregnant cows and calves in study 1. On the other hand, serum vitamin A of pregnant cows fed high-vitamin A increased approximately 40.7% in study 2 (P = 0.01). Serum vitamin A of offspring from pregnant cows fed high-vitamin A also increased about 28.6% (P = 0.033). In study 1, birth weight of calves from treated high-vitamin A was heavier about 3.2 kg than control. In study 2, birth weight of calves from treated high-vitamin A was also heavier about 4.2 kg compared with control. Gene expression level related muscle development (Myf5, Myf6, MyoG, PPARγ, and LPL) increased in the 31-day-old calf from pregnant cows treated high-vitamin A (P < 0.1). However, there were no significant differences both the early and late adipogenic marker genes (ZFP423, ERK2, KLF2, FABP4, SCD). In conclusion, to fed vitamin supplementation at 78,000 IU/day kept serum vitamin A from dropping in late-gestation Hanwoo cows. The vitamin A requirement (NRC, 2016) and vitamin A supplementation at 24,000 IU/day were insufficient for late-gestation cows. Enough vitamin A supplementation enhanced both birth weight and muscle development marker gene in the offspring. Therefore, it will help increase productivity in the calf.
