Csikszentmihalyi와 Hermanson이 1995년 「Intrinsic Motivation in Museums: Why Does one Want to Learn?」

Unlike general museums, children's museums focus on children to design their themes and space, and their exhibitions are displayed based on characteristics and behavior studies on children’s development and various themes related to culture and surroundings of children. In the present study, we analyze the exhibition display of children's museum and apply Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow theory on the types and characteristics of exhibits that children can actively and voluntarily watch. Then we examine the problems, derive methods of improvement, and study the requirements that should be considered important to ensure that children can understand the intent and the theme of the exhibition. In Csikszentmihalyi's 1975 Flow Theory, he explains that when a person concentrates on something, he or she concentrates by unconsciously blocking any disturbances while maintaining a natural and comfortable mood like a flowing body of water. Utilizing these characteristics, Flow theory is widely studied and utilized in areas of learning, education, marketing, games, media, internet, business, and sports, and has a connection with creativity and happiness. In this paper, we propose a methodology to improve quality of life by maximizing the individual 's abilities, therefore enhancing efficiency that allows management of time and also maximize sense of accomplishment to support ego development. Flow theory has been applied to museums and various kinds of exhibitions, and experience exhibition was effective in the form of exhibition composition to help visitors and participants experience flow. Direct experience of the exhibition through physical and mental interventions rather than the indirect experience is more effective in inducing flow into the exhibition. Participation display, in which visitors’ interventions through activities involving physical action can affect the content and result of the exhibition, can increase the degree of flow. The purpose of this study is theoretical investigation on the characteristics of exhibition display that goes further beyond fun- and interest-focused exhibits and allows flow for the most effective construction of experience display appropriate for Flow theory in children's museums. Through such theoretical investigations and case studies, we aim to derive structure and characteristics and present areas for improvement and direction for exhibition display of children’s museum. Examples of children’s museums selected to analyze the composition of exhibition display through the Flow theory are three national and public children's museums with a separate space for children's museums. The permanent exhibition in the National Museum of Korea Children's Museum, “Animal in Korean Mythology” of the National Folk Museum Children's Museum’s permanent exhibition, Gyeonggi Children’s Museum’s “How dose our Body?”. The types of feedback that can be obtained through watching these exhibitions were classified separately from internal and external environmental factors to examine tracking observation of field survey and interviews. We have derived ‘9 factors to consider for experience exhibition appropriate for flow’ by referring to the learning development model depending on intrinsic motivation studied in Csikszentmihalyi and Hermanson’s 1995 “Intrinsic Motivation in Museums: Why Does one Want to Learn?” and ‘Step-by-Step Components of flow(1990)’ in Csikszentmihalyi's “Flow: the psychology of optimal experience”. Tracking observation items and interview questions were written to apply this study to three cases of children's museums. Through this, 9 factors to be considered in exhibition display of children’s museums were examined by each factor. Accomplishment depending on feedback type of each case children museum’s exhibits and that of search and investigate type exhibition characteristics were compared to derive that the feedback depending on each exhibit type and the feedback that children receive by using exhibits must be immediate and clear for children to act appropriately according to the intent of the exhibits. Also, the search and investigate type exhibits that allow opportunities for children to select exhibits themselves and earn information about them is appropriate. Moreover, the explanations of methods should be intuitive in terms of utilizing the exhibits and specific so that there is no error in cognition. In addition, due to the nature of children, the exhibition space should be open to enable active interaction with human factors such as companions and peers, and when the disturbances caused by intervention are removed by visual and auditory separation, conscious observation could be accomplished through flow. In order to meet the requirements of the flow of the children's museum, the physical composition of the exhibits adequate for the developmental characteristics of the children is important, but also the interaction based on sympathy, an emotional area, must be accompanied. Among feedback types, interaction based on human factors helps understanding of the intentions, context, and theme of the exhibits, and help the development of sociality of children. The environment in the exhibition room where children can be immersed into the exhibition can vary depending on not only the characteristics of the exhibits but also various factors such as the design, space arrangement, and, cognitive access to the topic. In this study, the examination of children's museums with different themes is limited to the subjective factors of interviews and observation through the field survey, hence possessing limitations in serving as grounds for universal and objective criteria. However, this study is not limited to the direct and indirect experiences that can be gained when the Flow theory is applied to the exhibition display of children's museums, but it aims to make the development of physical and emotional environment that can support children’s autonomy that fits the purpose of children’s museums as basic information on the use of exhibits that children museum exhibition display should aim at. Also, continuous research should be conducted based on objective guidance on the methodology related to children's flow in the exhibition room.
