With the rapid development of information and communication technology, emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence are fundamentally reconfiguring the operational models and visitor experiences in museums. This transformation plays a crucial role not only in enhancing the traditional functions of museums, such as collection, preservation, exhibition, and dissemination, but also in strengthening their overall service, conservation, and management capabilities. In this context, museums are gradually evolving from simple physical exhibition spaces into highly interactive and intelligent virtual environments. To support these changes, the government has established a series of strategies, such as the "Cultural Heritage Digital Transformation 2030" plan, which presents a long-term vision for the digitalization of cultural heritage, providing relevant strategies and guidelines. These measures reflect the government's interest and investment in data, network, and artificial intelligence ecosystems, aiming to more effectively integrate traditional cultural heritage with modern digital technologies.
In the trend of digital transformation and user experience development, interactive exhibitions in history museums are becoming an important channel to provide valuable content experiences to visitors. To improve the efficiency of interactive exhibition systems, proactive changes and innovations from an experiential perspective are necessary. Many history museums currently face challenges in experience design related to digital transformation. Therefore, it is crucial to view and optimize the experience design of interactive exhibitions from a new perspective. In this process, understanding the characteristics of contents from the visitor's experience and researching practical methodologies beyond technical aspects is important.
This study proposes an optimized experience design system for interactive exhibitions in history museums, combining experience design theory with the digital transformation paradigm, and establishes theoretical directionality and strategic methodologies for the experience design system. The proposed experience design system is a comprehensive framework related to experience design, including various design directions and models derived from the author's research. This system provides systematic reference material for the optimized design of future history museum interactive exhibition experiences, provides exhibition and experience designers with new design ideas, and is a system that presents strategic directions for the development of future history museums. It is a system that serves as the basis for an exhibition platform for building a corresponding history museum.
The study was conducted as follows: First, the definition and various classification methods of history museums were explored based on literature and previous studies, and key technological types related to digital transformation were studied in depth. The definition, evolution, and experience characteristics of interactive exhibition contents and experience design were explained, emphasizing their applicability in history museums. Second, in the case study, interactive exhibition contents and experience design in history museums in Korea, China, the United States, and the United Kingdom were analyzed from an international perspective. Accessibility, interactivity, immersion, education, and personalization were used as evaluation criteria to analyze each case, clarifying the current situation and development direction. Third, an innovative experience design system compatible with the digital transformation era was proposed. The directionality of interactive exhibition content design for history museums was summarized, and the impact on visitor experience was explored. The importance of online-offline convergence, immersive experience design, co-creation design models, and digital community frameworks was emphasized. Fourth, the proposed experience design system is used as an example to try to apply the solution to the Henan Museum in China. To identify development issues in Henan Museum interactive exhibition content and verify the applicability and efficiency of the proposed system, solutions such as a customized guide app interface, holographic immersive experience space, virtual history character guide avatar, and metaverse community design were proposed. did. This process becomes an important reference point for the digital transformation of history museums.
The main results of this study are as follows: This study proposed an experience design system and platform for optimizing interactive exhibition contents in history museums. To this end, a new strategic perspective and methodology suitable for history museums in the digital transformation era were derived, and based on this, the theoretical directionality and experience types of the interactive exhibition content design system were re-established. First, the design elements and components of interactive exhibition contents for history museums are presented in a complementary and mutually verifiable manner, enhancing the strategic thinking of researchers and exhibition designers through an integrated and systematic approach. This contributes to improving both theoretical depth and practical efficiency in the design of interactive exhibition contents in history museums. Second, through the history museum visitor experience model, a deeper understanding of the visitor experience was achieved, and a strategy to make visitors the subjects who construct the meaning of the experience, moving beyond being mere recipients of technology and services, was presented. This emphasizes shifting the role of designers from service providers to facilitators and planners. Third, an experience design system that can strengthen the connection with historical content was presented. This emphasizes the importance of online-offline convergence, immersive experience design, co-creation design models, and digital community frameworks, and serves as a crucial strategy for ensuring continuous visitor engagement and effective learning experiences.
Based on the results of this study, the optimization process of the experience design system for interactive exhibition contents can function as a strategic platform for guiding the optimal interactive experience in constructing interactive exhibitions. Therefore, the significance and expected effects of this study are as follows: First, it presents the developmental potential of research on the experience of interactive exhibition contents and explores various strategies and criteria for applying the experiential elements of interactive exhibition contents. Second, from an academic perspective, the experience design system proposed in this study can serve as a theoretical methodology for constructing an interactive exhibition content platform, providing an important tool for mastering the user experience elements of a segmented approach. Third, from a practical perspective, an applicable experience design strategy system was established based on the characteristics of the visitor experience process and the design direction of interactive exhibition contents. Based on these research results, it is hoped that the optimization of the experience design system and application platform for interactive exhibition design will contribute to enhancing the user experience.
