Enteric viruses are a major cause of acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children. This study investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of common enteric viruses in children under 5 years of age in Seoul, South Korea. From October 2015 to November 2016, 488 fecal samples were collected from children hospitalized with acute diarrhea at Chung-Ang University Hospital. Group A rotavirus (RVA), norovirus genogroup II (NoV-GII), adenovirus (AdV), astrovirus (AsV), sapovirus (SaV), and human parechovirus (HPeV) were detected using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The overall prevalence rate of enteric viruses were 49.8% (243/488). At least one viral agent was found in 243 cases positive was detected from children with acute diarrhea, RVA in 142 cases (29.1%), NoV-GII in 84 cases (17.2%), HPeV in 76 cases (15.6%), AdV in 17 cases (3.5%), AsV in 5 cases (1.0%), and SaV in 2 cases (0.4%). Single infection was detected in 174 cases (35.7%), and coinfections were found in 69 cases (14.1%). Among the 69 cases had mixed infections were detected, there were 57 (82.5%) dual infections, 10 (14.5%) triple infections and 2 (3.0%) quadruple infections. Coinfections occurred prevalent in children from 6–24 month of age, there were 56 cases (81.2%). Mixed infections between rotavirus and norovirus were most common, there were 37 cases (53.6%) including coinfection with parechovirus, adenovirus, and astrovirus. The G and P genotypes of group A rotavirus were determined for 142 samples. The predominant type was G2 (21.8%), followed by G1 (21.1%), G9 (16.9%), G3 (10.6%), and G4 (4.9%). VP4 types detected were P[4], P[6], and P[8]. The most frequent type was P[8] (49.3%), followed by P[4] (14.1%), and P[6] (4.2%). G and P genotypes remained undetermined were 24.7% and 32.4%, respectively. This result suggests different prevalence rates and the diversity of enteric viruses in Korean children. Thus, it is necessary to continue epidemiological surveillance and coinfection rates of the enteric viruses to better understand the evolving status and mechanism pathogens in gastrointestinal infections.
