The aim of this dissertation was to present a comprehensive picture of studies on resilience via comparison and systematic categorization of related variables. A meta-analysis was performed from the studies conducted in South Korea for the last 20 years or so with the purpose of suggesting, by reviewing factors relative to adult resilience, preventative measures for clinicians and the needs and directions for future research. With the purpose in mind, 167 empirical studies (journal articles, theses, and dissertations) published from 1998 to the first half of 2017 were selected to perform a meta-analysis to integrate research findings. To measure effect sizes, variables were classified into either protective or risk factors, which then were categorized into individual, familial, and organizational·societal levels. Also analyzed were changes in variables relative to moderating variables of female ratio, types of occupation, and measurement instruments. Results were as follows: First, for protective factors, subfactors on all three levels were confirmed, with individual factors showing the largest effect size, followed by organizational·societal factors. On the individual level, positive affect, self·a sense of self, life and spirituality, capacity and disposition showed large effect sizes while those of proactive tendency, and cognition and awareness turned out to be medium. Family support, the only factor confirmed on the familial level, showed a medium effect size. On the organizational·societal level, positivity towards organizations showed the largest effect size, followed by relations and support, job description, job and performance, and life balance, in the order. All these factors fell in the medium effect size range. Thus, enhancing factors on the individual level might be an effective intervention to increase protective factors. Positive experiences on the other two levels would reinforce individual factors. Second, subfactors of adult resilience on all the three levels were confirmed for risk factors. Effect sizes of factors on the three levels fell in the medium size range, with the family-related factors showing the largest, followed by organizational·societal factors. For individual factors, stress, negative affect, suicidal ideation, and addiction to smartphones showed large effect sizes. Attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance on the familial level, and burnout, and role and job stress on the organizational·societal level were in the large effect size range as well. Focusing on the familial and organizaional·societal level interventions along with enhanced support for personal resources might be a useful strategy to decrease risk factors. Third, a meta-regression analysis to evaluate moderating effects resulted as follows: female ratio in all the protective factors on the individual level and female ratio in the factor of cognition and awareness showed positive association with the related variables in effect sizes; types of occupation in all the protective factors on the individual level, cognition and awareness, all the protective factors on the organizational·societal level, relation and support, positivity towards organizations, job and performance, and life balance showed moderating effects; and for protective factors, measurement instruments in all the factors on the individual level, cognition and awareness, capacity and disposition, job and performance on the organizational·societal level had moderating effects while, for risk factors, negative affect and post-traumatic stress on the individual level along with all the factors on the organizational·societal level did as well.
This dissertation reviewed variables relative to adult resilience, effect sizes of the variables, and effects of moderating variables. Findings suggest facilitating adult resilience requires development and training on the individual and contextual levels. The dissertation concludes with discussion and considerations for future research.
