In this study, ecological index and benthic health index in entire coastal area of Korea were identified and compared. Macrozoobenthos data and sediment environmental data of the National Marine Ecosystem Survey conducted in 2015-2016 were used. In case of the entire Korean coastal area (East Sea, West Sea, South Sea and Jeju), a total of 146 stations was surveyed two times in May and August during the two year sampling period (2015-2016). Additional 26 stations were seasonally sampled in 2015-2016 to assess ecological quality of ecological significant areas, including three estuaries (Han, Geum and Nakdong river) and a certain upwelling zone in eastern coast. The entire Korean coastal area is divided into five ecological regions (West, Southwest, Korea Strait, East, Jeju), and the ecological significant areas of Korea were analyzed separately. The benthic indices used for the health evaluation of the benthic ecosystem included AMBI, BHI, BPI, BQI, EQR, and M-AMBI. For the performance comparison of benthic indices, the non-parametric statistical tests (Wilcoxon paired sample test and Kendall's rank correlation test) were used, and the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate the correlation between the order of ecological rankings and order of environmental conditions. The result of the analysis showed that some ecological regions and ecological significant areas were similar to other ecological regions and ecological significant areas. Among ecological regions, H' and M-AMBI were evaluated to be similar and among ecological significant areas, AMBI and EQR were evaluated to be similar. While biodiversity and ecosystem health were not necessarily similar in the southwest and in the Jeju, in the Han River Estuary, biodiversity and ecosystem health were similar. East and Jeju showed very much different results in inter-index order correlation and Upwelling zone in eastern coast also showed different inter-index order correlation. In addition, the health index, which reflects the sediment contamination level, is different in each ecological region. In conclusion, it is not possible to evaluate the health of the entire coastal areas in Korea with only one index. It would be more desirable to evaluate the ecological health by taking several indices together.
