This study aims at analyzing the status of adult education programs in art museums conducted as lifelong education and the significance and characteristics of the programs in lifelong education. The importance of lifelong education is continuously growing with changes in modern society, the advent of information era and new media, and the need for self-actualization. Art museums play an important role as lifelong educational institutions in the field of arts. Law No. 14204 Museum and Art Gallery Support Act emphasizes the association between museums and art galleries and lifelong education. This suggests that the educational function of museums and art galleries became more important as the interest and demand for lifelong education increased in our society. Therefore, the overall status of activities in art museums needs to be investigated. To this end, Chapter 2 provides a theoretical background for understanding of lifelong education and art museum education. Lifelong education emphasizes that human education should be carried out throughout the life, and it seeks to improve the quality of life through various educational experiences. Art education for adults has important value as a way of looking at the world self-expression. As art museums have continuously growing as institutions with the responsibilities, the need to identify characteristics and implications of the current status of the art museum activities has been suggested. Chapter 3 describes the results of the analysis of adult education programs in art museums regarding the operational aspects of program implementation form and organization and the content aspects of program type and content. The most frequent program hours were between 2 pm and 4 pm on Wednesdays, and it seemed necessary to improve the accessibility of students by increasing nighttime opening and weekend programs. Most art museums (29.7%) ran the programs in the size of 16–30 participants, while the total proportion of the museums that ran the programs in the size of 50–100 participants or the size of over 100 accounted for 34% of art museums, suggesting the challenge for running programs for learner-centered education. In terms of the program content, the Docent training program was based on art history and dealt with the theory and practice of Docent. The exhibition-linked programs most frequently engaged in studying exhibitions, artworks, and artists of contemporary art according to exhibition themes, while many theoretical programs dealt with social and cultural backgrounds and phenomena. Other programs included genres such as fine art, design, crafts, photography, and architecture. Culture and art experiential and practical training programs had a relatively high proportion of programs on Western paintings, while covering a variety of genres including Eastern paintings, design, photography and crafts. The content of the culture and art theory programs did not concentrate on a single art field but included a wide range of art content; in line with the diversity in content, a high proportion of programs were concerned with subtopics in the field of humanities including social studies, culture, history, and philosophy. The results of survey conducted with learners in the educational setting revealed that self-development was the most frequent goal of program participation, followed by hobby and leisure. Regarding the reason for choosing art museum as an educational institution for them, offering the course they want was the most frequent reason, followed by close distance. Regarding preferred program type, exhibition-linked programs ranked highest, followed by theoretical and practical training programs. Regarding preferred program areas, art appreciation ranked highest, followed by art expression and practical training. The most important consideration in program selection was program topic and content, followed by the program hours and the day of the week which determine the likelihood of participation. Other major considerations included credibility of course and instructor’s expertise. In terms of class size, the most preferred sizes were the mid-large class of approximately 50 participants for theoretical programs, and the class size of 10–20 participants for experiential and practical training programs. Regarding program duration, 2–3 months and 3–6 months were most preferred by most respondents at similar levels. The most frequently reported barrier to program participation was the scheduling issue, followed by the lack of classes they want and that they were mentally unavailable. Regarding program improvements they wanted, a wider range of program hours and types ranked high. The educational effect of the program that ranked highest was the improved aesthetic perspective, followed by improved ability to appreciate and critique, and emotional refinement. Regarding benefits of experience of art museum education, improved quality of life ranked highest, followed by increased culturedness and basic art literacy. Chapter 4 discusses characteristics and art educational implications of adult education programs in art museums. Common characteristics are as follows: (1) implementation of the Docent training program for specialized volunteers, (2) implementation of culture and art theory programs linked with humanities, and (3) implementation of experiential and practical training programs in voluntary art. Major differences among programs of the studied art museums are as follows: (1) implementation of independent programs according to characteristics of art museums, (2) implementation of differential programs for target participants, and (3) varying program hours. The implications of art museum adult education as lifelong education for art education are as follows. First, it fosters aesthetic perspectives and enhances quality of life of adult learners. Second, it provides art education based on actual artworks for adult learners. These have been the findings on the current status of adult education programs in art museums. Although the study has the limitation that the region and participants were restricted, the study is expected to be used for understanding of adult education programs in art museums and as materials with research evidence. Based on the high level of physical and human resources in art museums, it is hoped that research to advance adult education in art museums is conducted extensively in the future.
