The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of parents' rearing attitudes and infants’ smartphone use on the self-regulation and playability of two- year-old infants. To this end, general tendency of parents' rearing attitudes, infants’ smartphone use, self-regulation and playfulness of two- year-old infants was identified and the relationship among them was analyzed. Then the effects of parents' rearing attitudes and infants’ smartphone use on the self-regulation and playfulness of two- year-old infants were investigated The research problems of this study according to the aforementioned research purpose are as follows. 1. What are the parenting attitude, use of smartphone, self-regulation, and playfulness of two-year-old infants? 2. What are the relationships of parenting attitude, use of smartphone, self-regulation, and playfulness of two-year-old infants? 3. What are the effects of parenting attitude and infants’use of smartphone on their self-regulation and playfulness? 1) What is the effect of parenting attitude and infants’use of smartphone on their self-regulation? 2) What is the effect of parenting attitude and infants’use of smartphone on their playfulness?
The subjects were 312 two-year-old chidren in day care centers in S city in Chungcheongnam-do. Parents and teachers of the children were surveyed. To measure the parenting attitude, questionnaire developed by Schaefer (1959) and used by Bae Munju (2005) were used. To measure the use of smartphone of infants, ‘The Smartphone Addiction Observer Scale for Infants and Children’ developed by the National Information Society Agency (NIA) was used. To measure the self-regulation of infants, self-regulation part in the ‘2-year-old infant's social emotional development rating scale’ by Kim Hoin (2010) was used. For the measurement of playfulness of infants, the ‘playfulness Scale’ developed by Barnett(1991) and modified by Yun Sangin for children was used. The collected data were analyzed according to the research problems using SPSS 20.0 statistical program. The descriptive statistics analysis was performed in order to investigate the parenting attitude, infants’ smartphone use, self-regulation, and playfulness. In addition, correlation analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between variables. To examine the effects of the smartphone use on self-regulation and playfulness, hierarchical regression analysis was performed. The followings are the results of this study according to the research problems. First, regarding the parenting attitudes, it was higher in the order of affection, autonomy, control, and rejection. Infants' smartphone use was moderate (1.83 points / 4 points). self-regulation and playfulness of infants were found to be higher than middle. The sub-factors of infants’ playfulness were higher in the order of physical spontaneity, expression of joy, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, and sense of humor, all of which were fair as the value higher than middle. Second, among parenting attitudes, affective attitude and autonomous attitude had negative correlation with the smartphone use. As affectionate and autonomous attitudes were higher, the degree of smartphone use decreased. Affective attitude and autonomous attitude had positive correlation with self-regulation and playfulness. As affectionate and autonomous attitudes were higher, self-regulation and playfulness tended to increase. Among parenting attitudes, rejecting attitude and the controlling attitude had positive correlation with smartphone use, which means when parents showed more rejecting attitude and the controlling attitude, children tended to use smartphone more. Rejecting attitude and the controlling attitude had negative correlation with social spontaneity, expression of joy and physical spontaneity from the playfulness. It means that as parents showed more rejecting and controlling attitudes, children tended to show lower social spontaneity, expression of joy and physical spontaneity. It was found that sense of humor had positive correlation. In other words, when they showed more rejecting and controlling attitudes, children’s sense of humor tended to become higher. Third, when looking into the effects of parenting attitude and smartphone use of children on the self-regulation and playfulness of children, it was found that there was very low effect. Parenting attitude did not have significant effects on self-regulation. When the degree of smartphone use was added, self-regulation was affected but it was not big. Out of parenting attitudes, rejecting and controlling attitudes had low effects on expression of joy, which was a sub-factor of the playfulness of children. Rejecting attitude was found to affect sense of humor but the level of effect was low. The use of smartphone did not make any significant effects. Conclusively, it was found that the effects of parenting attitude and smartphone use of infants on self-regulation and playfulness of infants were very low. However, this study suggested that there was meaningful relationship among parenting attitude, smartphone use of infants, self-regulation and playfulness.
