Abstract
Factors on Smartphone Addiction Tendency and Interpersonal Relationship of undergraduates
Kwon, Eun-Jung Department of Nursing Graduate School of Korea University Directed by Prof. Han, Kuem Sun, RN, Ph.D
As undergraduates experience extended interpersonal relationships, building healthy interpersonal relationships is considered an important growth challenge. Increased stress of life, reduced self-esteem and communication ability, and smartphone addiction tendency will affect the decline of interpersonal relationship ability. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the factors that affect undergraduates' interpersonal relationship ability.
This study has developed a hypothetical model to describe undergraduates'interpersonal relationship ability. In hypothetical models, external variables are stress of life, self-esteem, communication ability, and endogenous variables are smartphone addiction tendency and interpersonal relationship ability.
In order to verify the hypothetical model, the questionnaire was distributed and collected to 220 undergraduates from four-year universities in the Seoul metropolitan area from August to September 2017. With the exception of duplicate or insincerely marked questionnaires, the final 202 data were used.
In this study, undergraduates' interpersonal relationship ability was evaluated as Relationship Change Scale, and smartphone addiction tendency was evaluated as an Adult Smartphone Addiction Self-diagnosis Scale(S scale). Stress of life was evaluated as Stress of Life Scale, self-esteem was evaluated as Self-Esteem Scale(SES), and communication ability was evaluated as Global Interpersonal Communication Competence(GICC). The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0 and AMOS 22.0 programs.
There were seven hypotheses that undergraduates' stress of life, self-esteem, communication ability directly affect smartphone addiction tendency, and stress of life, self-esteem, communication ability, smartphone addiction tendency directly or inderectly affect interpersonal relationship ability. Accordingly hypothetical structural model was constructed.
The results from this study are as follows.
The model was modified based on the results of the primary analysis because the fitness indices of the hypothetical model did not reach the recommended level. The goodness of fit index of the modified model was .911, tucker-lewis index was .939, comparative fit index was .954, normed fit index was .906, root mean squared error of approximation was .065, and the overall fitness indices of the modified model were a well fit.
In this study, four of the seven hypotheses were rejected because they were not statistically significant and three of them were statistically supported. The factors that directly affect undergraduates' interpersonal relationship ability were self-esteem(β=.26, p<.01) and communication ability(β=.62, p<.001), and stress of life(β=.34, p<.01) directly affected smartphone addiction tendency.Undergraduates' smartphone addiction tendency was 14.8 percent explained by stress of life, self-esteem, communication ability, and interpersonal relationship ability was 65.9 percent explained by stress of life, self-esteem, communication ability, and smartphone addiction tendency. Communication ability was found to have the biggest influence on interpersonal relationship ability.
Based on the results of this study, it would be an effective strategy to provide intervention with promoting self-esteem and communication ability for the improvement of undergraduates' interpersonal relationship ability.
