In this study, the purpose of this study is to analyze the mathematical problem solving processes of fifth grade students based on problem solving behavior factors of Schoenfeld, to understand the characteristics of students' mathematical problem solving processes.
First, what is the difference of the problem solving processes of the 5th grade students depending on the type of learning? Second, what is the difference of the problem solving processes of the 5th grade students depending on the content domain?
To accomplish this, 8 students from S elementary school in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, Korea were selected as research subjects. In the second semester of 2017, two groups of students were selected, respectively. The protocol was analyzed by extracting the elements that can be observed in the elementary school students' problem solving processes with reference to the problem solving behavior factors. Based on the collected data, we used the chi-squared test of the SPSS program to check whether the differences in problem-solving behavior factors are significant, depending on the type of learning and the content domain. We compared and analyzed based on the frequency of use of problem solving behavior factors and specific case characteristics.
The results of the above study are as follows. First, it showed difference of problem solving process according to learning type, and frequency of use of problem solving behavior factors and specific use characteristics were found. Differences according to learning types in the frequency of use of problem solving behaviors were statistically significant at the level of significance (p < 0.01) as a result of chi-square test. In problem solving process, it was confirmed that the Diverging is the learners who are creative and liked to collect ideas through approach to various viewpoints. Assimilating is a learner who uses a lot of knowledge resources about mathematical concepts and properties and has a characteristic to check carefully when the theory does not fit the facts. Converging was found to be a learner who solved the problem abstractly and practically by using regularity finding and inductive discussion. Accommodating can be seen as a learner with an intuitive and active tendency through the appearance of relying on each other's opinions and information, and using the informal and intuitive knowledge. Second, it showed difference of problem solving process according to content domain, and frequency of use of problem solving behavior factors and specific use characteristics were found. Differences in the frequency of problem solving behaviors were statistically significant at the chi-square test (p < 0.001).
The implications of this study are as follows. As the demand for individualized education is increasing, students show difference in problem solving process according to the type of learning and the content domain. Therefore, it is necessary to screen and evaluate the appropriate education methods and activities. Diverging may prefer to educate by collecting and grouping knowledge and information from experience or to train through small group learning. Assimilating may prefer to learn inductively how to solve problems, individual activities, and exploring the mathematical concepts. Converging can prefer learning to deeply explore problems that have one answer or solution, or to solve problems by applying reality. Accommodating can prefer to learn and challenge by presenting project learning or new problem solving with setting goals and performing with people. Depending on content domain, a hypothetical deductive and structured learning method can be used to solve numerical and computational problems. Because it shows more control than the figure, it will be able to improve problem solving ability through structured learning step by step considering students' thinking. Inductive and active learning methods are available when solving geometric problems. Solving geometric problems through various active activities will help you to improve problem solving ability.
