This study aimed to propose a method of teaching choral singing to first-year middle school students using the Kodály method. For theoretical background, the author reviewed the main contents of the Revised National Music Curriculum of 2015: Zoltán Kodály’s life, his educational philosophy, Kodály’s teaching method, and choir education were reviewed. After analysing the choral songs from 14 kinds of Middle School Textbook ‘Music I’, the author selected three songs proposing a teaching guidance of choral singing that drew on the Kodaly method. Kodàly emphasized on the importance of singing activities for everyone to learn and enjoy music easily, saying, “Music should belong to everyone.” He also gave weight to teaching how to read, write, and understand sheet music and asserted that music should be educated with well-selected folk music and music of high artistic value. This philosophy of Kolàly can be understood more specifically through elements of his method including the rhythm syllables, the movable-do system, and the hand signs. The key characteristics of the proposed method of teaching choral singing to first-year middle schools students using this method of Kodàly are as follows: First, the guidance is divided into two classes. The first class is to develop fundamental musical skills, and the second to feel harmonies and sing in chorus; Second, the Kodàly rhythm syllables are used to enable students to learn rhythm in easy and fun ways; Third, the Kodàly hand signs are used to teach intervals and develop their inner hearing ability; Fourth, solmization based on the movable-do system is included to improve the students' understanding of tonality and enable them to learn melodies easily; And lastly, the Kodàly scale stairs are used for easier understanding of whole tones and semi-tones; I expect this thesis would be used appropriately in the Middle School classroom. It is also hoped that the choral class will help emotional development and a sense of teamwork as well as musical improvement for the students. Further research and efforts on music education would be needed to enable anyone to enjoy music easily, enrich aesthetic life, and therefore achieve holistic growth.
