The rapid economic growth of modern society and the development of the information industry have created a new economic form called the sharing economy. The emergence of a shared economy, not a concept of owning an object but of lending and using it, has emerged as a "Coworking Space" that is based on the trust of members and provides an economic and practical workspace. Unlike vertical workspaces in the past, a collaborative space is an enhanced workplace where synergies are expected between members of each field, providing a new and creative workspace, as well as providing a business relationship between the members. In addition, it has become a recent trend in workplace as it expects the value of sustainable collaboration among its members in an open space with flexible boundaries of work areas through interrelationships with surrounding elements.
Therefore, this study recognizes the need to understand space through a contextual approach based on the understanding of social and physical characteristics that appear in the collaborative space, and tries to analyze and understand the relationship between the contextual characteristics and the members that appear in the co-working space.
This study first organizes the detailed theoretical content through prior study and literature review for the overall understanding of the co-working space. In addition, the concept of context is established by examining various literature to clarify the direction of the approach of the context, and then the underlying spatial context element is derived through consideration of the concept of context used in various studies. Based on this, social context, behavioral context and spatial context elements were derived. Keywords corresponding to each context element were extensibility, openness and identity in the social context, and affordance, interation and culturality were extracted in the behavioral context. In the spatial context, the keywords of centrality, territory and directionality are extracted and applied to the case analysis, and the context representation characteristic elements that appear in the case-selected co-working space are analyzed and sorted out.
The criteria for case analysis were selected based on domestic and overseas cases since 2010, when the number of co-working spaces increased sharply. In detail, a wide range of network environments were selected around the co-working space, which was selected as a good example for famous media. Korea's Co-working Spaces are located in the Seoul Metropolitan Government, operated its website, and 10 places were selected for direct visits or interviews with officials, while overseas Co-working Spaces are selected and analyzed to collect data on space using the Internet and magazine media.
The analysis shows that the collaborative space aims to create a community among its members by physically and psychologically expanding the space through the interrelationship of social, behavioral and spatial contexts. However, social and behavioral contexts were clearly represented by the specialized tasks, spatial support, and physical environment of the existing space, as well as the spatial context. This shows that each element is strongly or weakly represented by the surrounding environment, but is not alone in expressing members' community, but can always interact with the surrounding element and be represented by physical, psychological and social characteristics. The results are as follows.
First, social context is related to the interrelationships between members. As an element related to the community, which is the most important value of the collaborative space, the emergence of social context is an important medium for collaboration and communication, and an important element for the formation of diverse communities.
Second, the behavioral context focuses on the interaction between individuals and individuals, individuals and groups, and groups and groups. This is based on the behavioral support of the physical and psychological environment of the members within the collaborative space, and is always interrelated with the physical and social structures in the space. The emergence of behavioral context in the co-working space is seen as an important characteristic in community formation in the context of social context, and is shown as a characteristic that creates a culture in which social relationships freely form in the co-working space and defines the nature of space.
Third, spatial context is a necessary element for social context and behavioral context to interact, serving as a medium for supporting behavior for social relationships among members of the working space. The emergence of spatial context in a co-working space is seen as a characteristic of orientation that shapes the identity of space, actively responds to the relationship between member and space, and leads to the formation of community through accidental encounters.
Thus, it is clear that the community must recognize and view the collaborative space as an enhanced workplace, constantly interacting with the surrounding physical and psychological environment, as a collection of elements that flow nonstop, and from an integrated and diverse perspective. This is the beginning of a contextual approach that is focused on in this study, and furthermore, it is believed that continuous research should be conducted as a means to make the environment more accessible and accessible to all, not just to the co-working space.
