In this study, an experimental research was conducted to examine the effect of personality fairy tale used art activities on the improvement of such sub-variables of young children’s social and emotional competency as self-conception, peer interaction, emotional control ability, adult interaction, norm recognition, and emotional recognition & presentation, and of whole social & emotional competency. And interviews with school teachers who had the experience of carrying out personality fairy tale used art activities were also conducted to verify study findings. For this, a study question was established as follows ‘What is the effect of personality fairy tale used art activities on young children’s social & emotional competency (self-conception, peer interaction, emotional control ability, adult interaction, norm recognition, and emotional recognition & presentation)?’ Study subjects were 28 3-year old children and they were sampled from G public child-care center and S private child-care center in Gunpo-si, Gyeonggi-do. And 14 children from S private child-care center were assigned to an experimental group, and 14 children from G public child-care center were distributed in a control group. Two groups had a similar physical environment of daily routines and classroom area compositions, and the homogeneity of two groups was confirmed. And five teachers were sampled from national/public and private child-care centers in Gyeonggi-do and then individual interviews with them were carried out, thus collecting data. Children in the experimental group carried out personality fairy tale used art activities in 12 sessions, whereas children in the control group conducted big and small group activities according to the theme of nuri curriculum. Experiment was carried out in 12 sessions for 6 weeks (twice a week) from March 18 to April 26, 2019. As a tool of measurement, this study used ‘Social-Emotional Competence Measurement Scale for Young Children’ developed by Lee Eun-jeong (2015). This scale is a checklist based on teacher’s observation. Collected data were statistically processed using the SPSS 25 program. And in order to examine the exact effect of personality fairy tale used art activity program and adjust the difference occurred in the pre-test, ANCOVA was conducted after establishing the result of pre-test as covariance. Interviews with five teachers at child-care centers were carried out from May 2 to 7, 2019. In order to conduct the interview smoothly, the author firsthand met them and carried out in-depth interviews with them. Collected data from teacher interviews were transcribed and then analyzed/interpreted according to the categories of social & emotional competency. Study findings are as follows: Children who experienced personality fairy tale used art activities presented improvement in all the sub-variables of social & emotional competency. In other words, the experiment group presented better improvement in such sub-variables of social & emotional competency as self-conception, peer interaction, emotional control ability, adult interaction, norm recognition, and emotional recognition & presentation than the control group did. And some data of interviews with teachers also supported this finding. This finding seems to present the fact that after reading personality fairy tales, young children identified their thoughts, feelings and senses with those of fairy tale leading characters and then expressed it through art activities, thus recognizing themselves in their surrounding environment, sharing ideas with peers, and understanding how to express their feelings and emotions in a better way. In addition, through their activities, they experienced a variety of situations directly/indirectly and thought/understood other’s emotions, thus learning and improving the controlling technique of even their own emotions. Based on study findings, personality fairy tale used art activities are an effective technique to improve young children’s social & emotional competency. In this vein, it is necessary for child-care teachers in early childhood educational agencies to pay particular attention to young children’s nonverbal/verbal expressions of feelings and then respond them keenly. The author hopes study findings will be used as a method of teaching/learning.
