With the increase ofunmarried or cohabiting couples, marriage and wedding ceremony is no longer considered a requirement, but an individual choice. Decreased in wedding due to such lifestyle and perception changes has led to intensified competition between related enterprises. In addition, marriage-related consumption is polarized with a group of thrifty people who place meaning on marriage and wedding ceremony itself on one end and another group of consumers who spare nothing on marriage-related consumption. Under such reality, there is growing concern that wedding market will shrink and decline rapidly, and discussions continue about breakthroughs to overcome this crisis. This study, therefore, was conducted with unmarried men and women in their 20s to 30s who are potential customers in the wedding market in order to grasp the characteristics of wedding consumption. To this end, the researcher newly developed wedding consumption propensity questions based on reviewing related previous studies and research on consumption propensity related to fashion, beauty and hotel businesses that are closely connected to the wedding industry. These questions were used in this study after verifying their validity through interview and preliminary surveys with experts and the general public. Therefore, with continued follow-up studies such as research comparing general consumption propensity and wedding consumption propensity of customers who are willing to marry, continue, it will be possible to establish selective and intensive marketing strategies targeting the declining wedding consumer and prepare for a market crisis. As a result of conducting this survey study, marriage motive was classified into four factors: customary, economic, emotional and romantic motives, and wedding consumption propensity was classified into eight factors: Self-conscious, distinctive, utility-seeking, reasonable, aesthetic, playful, sympathetic and value-seeking wedding consumption propensities. Next, as a result of analyzing differences and similarities between survey participants, it was possible to categorize them into ‘stable marriage conception group’, ‘active marriage conception group’ and ‘passive marriage conception group’ based on marriage motives and into ‘group seeking rational consumption of wedding’, ‘group seeking conspicuous consumption of wedding’ and ‘group seeking prevalent consumption of wedding’ according to wedding consumption propensities. The study was conducted according to the research questions. First, the differences in marriage motive, wedding consumption propensity, wedding preparation behavior, and wedding product choice behavior were analyzed along the demographic variables such as gender, age, education, occupation, and income. After conducting group analyses according to marriage motive and wedding consumption propensity, it was analyzed how wedding preparation behaviors and wedding product choice behaviors differed for each group. As a result, meaningful findings were obtained in various aspects. This study is academically significant and different from previous studies and in that it developed and used consumption propensity questions about wedding, whereas previous studies on wedding consumers utilized the general concept consumption propensity. In addition, the practical significance of this study can be found in that it deducedresearch findings helpful for establishing and implementing marketing strategies suitable for respective segments of market in an innovative and proactive manner through classification of wedding consumers into groups along with detailed analyses of their characteristics. Key Word: Wedding Consumer ,Wedding preparation behavior, Wedding Product Choice, Wedding Consumption Propensity
