This study develops and applies an art-play-therapy program improve behavioral problems of young children in multicultural families. The research questions are as follows. First, how is the development of an art-play-therapy program to improve the behavioral problem of young children in multicultural families? Second, how did the behavioral problem of young children in multicultural families change in the application procedure of play therapy programs focusing on art activities? For this study, from March 2019 to November 2019, three young children in multicultural families were recruited from a day care center in Seoul. Regarding the research procedure, basic examination of behavioral problem of young children in multicultural family was conducted with three young children, and as result, two children showed behavioral problems. The customized art-play-therapy programs for the two children were developed and administrated to improve their behavioral problem. The behavioral problem of young children in multicultural families were diagnosed using direct observation, parental interview, and behavioral problem scale test. The researcher developed the behavioral problem improvement program for young children in multicultural families, and a professional therapist administered the programs 40 minutes per week, a total of 20 sessions. In addition, each 40 minutes per week, a total of 10 sessions of language-play-therapy program were administered for one young children who needed language development support. Both qualitative and quantitative data sets were collected and analyzed. Qualitative data included direct observation in multicultural families, parental interviews, and professional therapists' records. Quantitative data were collected through the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ), a behavioral problem scale test for young children in multicultural families. The collected data were compared and analyzed by integrating them into the preliminary, beginning, middle, and ending stages. The results of this study are as follows. First, in order to develop an art-play-therapy program to improve behavioral problem of young children in multicultural family, it is necessary to collect overall information such as the behavior, life history, and family history of young children in multicultural families. By doing so, their major problems are revealed and then early childhood educators may decide which kinds of programs and content can be selected to improve those behavioral problem accordingly. The program is divided into beginning stages, middle stages, and ending stages for gradual improvement of their behavioral problem. In the early stages’ goal is to provide emotional stability through the formation of an overall relationship to express their own feelings. The middle stage is an opportunity to express and recognize their anger and suppressed feeling. At the ending stage, the details are determinded to recognize their feelings and form a positive relationship with others. Each session has certain processing rules such as beginning with exploration, moving into therapeutic play and then expanding to sharing emotions. The goal and method of activities are gradually expanded from the sense of stability through the internal expression of children's own emotions to the improvement of expressiveness, the feeling of accomplishment, emotional control, and positive relationship with others. In doing so, the young children are encouraged to participate in the activity. The evaluation of the play-therapy-programs is carried out in both unstructured and structural ways to find out the changes in behavioral problem of young children of multicultural families. Second, through the application of the art-play-therapy program, behavioral problem such as hostility-attack, worry-anxiety, and distracting behavior of young children in multicultural families decreased. At the beginning of the play therapy program, hostile and offensive behaviors were strongly expressed when others intervened in their play surroundings or their desires were not met. But when activities that can alleviate tension and provide a sense of security were provided, they showed a sense of stability in their relationships with others when they participated in the play. In addition, their desire to be recognized and their daunted behavior were gradually alleviated by forming self-esteem through their autonomous and leading experiences. Difficulties of sitting and waiting, listening to other people, and keeping have developed positively through the experience of relaxing their senses, controlling emotions, and understanding social rules and positive interaction with others. It was positive behavioral changes. In conclusion, the art-play-therapy program is effective in improving behavioral problem of young children in multicultural families. These results suggest that this study could be very effective to teachers and researchers who are trying to guide behavioral problem of young children in multicultural children systematically and also are providing applicable and practical data.
