The purpose of this case study is to explore and understand the teaching practices of the target teacher to promote prosocial behaviors in five-year-old, kindergarten children. The case study focuses on the teacher’s interactions with 22 children in her class at kindergarten, which is affiliated with G elementary school. The researcher collected data through 20 participation-observations from May 15th to June 17th, 2019, interviews with the teacher, and a review of official documents submitted to the kindergarten. The researcher made the transcripts of the observations, the reflective records of each observation day, interpretation papers, and teacher-interview records. The researcher constructed content-categories (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007/2011) of principal and sub-classes by analyzing common elements and keywords in the data. The researcher provided results according to the categories. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, to facilitate positive communications, the teacher actively listened, gave praises and encouragements, encouraged the children to ask for help and gave opportunities to share mind with peers. Second, to help children respect and care for each other in resolving conflicts among peers, the teacher guided them to resolve interpersonal disputes. For the children to solve their problems on their own, it was vital for her to provide an opportunity to practice conflict-resolving skills and to be role of reference person as a nonverbal behavior. Third, the teacher created a variety of environments to enhance prosocial behaviors. The teacher suggested for children to promote cooperation with friends and promoted the atmosphere of sharing. The teacher, also, provided a physical environment and a psychological atmosphere through the provision of various teaching aids to children, creating a teaching place for them to consider, cooperate and play with each other. Fourth, the teacher guided the children to keep their promises in consideration of one another. The teacher helped them learn to set rules for playing with peers, to value others’ possessions, and not to interrupt the teacher’s interactions with other children. The teacher also used name-tags to give equal opportunities for all children to participate in activities, and the system of “Helpers” to lead and service the children. In conclusion, the teacher assists the children in specific and diverse ways to enhance prosocial behaviors. The teacher models and instructs how to be prosocial in the class and encourages them to practice these prosocial behaviors and problem-solving skills in their peer-interactions to build considerate and respectful attitudes and fundamental social skills toward peers. These findings imply that teachers recognize the importance of teaching practice on the prosocial behavior of young children. Furthermore, it could be utilized as a basic material for developing tools to measure teacher’s prosocial behavior maps to enhance the prosocial behavior of young children.
