This study was conducted to understand factors affecting breakfast skipping in adolescents, to confirm their effects on the next breakfast, and to analyze the relationship between the factors and overall nutritional status. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 245 middle school students in Busan in November 2019 to investigate the characteristics of food intake for a day from dinner to breakfast the next day. In addition, Nutrition Quotient for Korean Adolescents(NQ-A) was used to confirm the overall nutritional status. The subjects in this study were 58(23.7%) male and 187(76.3%) female students. 75(30.6%) students were 1st grade, 97(39.6%) students were 2nd grade, 73(39.8%) students were 3rd grade. 15(6.1%) were underweight, 189(77.1%) were normal weight, 23(9.4%) were overweight, and 18(7.3%) were obese. In the results, 116(47.3%) students ate afternoon snack between lunch and dinner, 'confectionery' and 'beverage' were the most eaten. 221(90.8%) students ate dinner and the average time of dinner was 19:23. Skipping dinner students returned home later than eating dinner students and considered dinner less important. Female students had higher rates of dinner skipping, and dinner was consumed later than male(p<0.05). Most of them consumed the dinner at home, and the dinner time was later as the return time of the subjects was delayed (p<0.001). Students skipping dinner considered dinner less important than ones eating dinner(p<0.01). 65(26.5%) students ate late night snack, and the reasons for late night eating were 'delicious' and 'hungry'. 153(62.4%) students ate breakfast and the average time of breakfast was 7:33. The reasons for skipping breakfast were no time(47.8%) and no appetite(18.4%). Students eating breakfast had a faster dinner time the night before, earlier bedtime and wake-up time, and considered breakfast important, and was hungrier at the wake-up time than students skipping breakfast. Late-time meals affected bedtime delayed and the late bedtime affected wake-up time delayed. In the NQ score of the subjects, the total score was 57.6 point for male students, 52.1 point for female students. Male students' NQ score and factor scores for diversity and practice were higher than female students'. Late snack eating students' factor scores for moderation and practice were lower than non-eaters'. In addition, breakfast eating students' NQ score and factor scores for environments were higher than non-eaters'. The total score and factor scores for the environment was lower as the bedtime was late, and the factor scores for moderation and environment was lower as the time of dinner intake was late. As a result, the intake of dinner and late night snack on the previous day in adolescents didn't directly affect the intake of breakfast the next day. However, it was confirmed that the time of eating dinner and late night snack the day before and the late bedtime due to the intake of late time can affect the nutritional status and eating habits of adolescents. In summary, overall eating habits and life styles can affect breakfast skipping and their nutritional status in adolescents and it is necessary to educate adolescents to correct their lifestyle for improving their eating habits and having the appropriate intake time of dinner and late night snack.
