This study sought to investigate the energy drink consumption status of Korean middle school students and to find out the relationship between the demographic and social characteristics, health-related factors, psychological characteristics, factors related to eating and eating habits, and the frequency of energy drink intake. This study used data from the 15th online survey of youth health behaviors in 2019. In the analysis, 29,384 middle school students were surveyed on the frequency of consuming energy drinks. The frequency of intake of energy drinks has been investigated over the past seven days. Factors affecting the frequency of energy drink intake were investigated, including demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, health-related factors, psychological characteristics, and eating and eating habits. A cross-analysis was conducted to determine if there was a difference in the frequency of intake of energy drinks for each related factor. Multiple regression analyses were performed to identify factors that affect the intake of energy drinks. In summary, the results are as follows:
The frequency of intake of energy drinks was higher for male students than for female students, the higher the grade, the higher the status of coeducational students, the lower the academic performance, the lower the family, and the higher the students who do not drink or smoke. In addition, the less time to sleep, the higher the stress, and the higher the rate of consumption of energy drinks for students who experienced sadness, despair, and suicide.
