Psychiatric nurses can experience psychological trauma due to special nursing situations caused by mental disorders. Psychological trauma is a mental wound experienced by events outside the general scope, which can cause pain or induce adaptive change; therefore, it is necessary to understand the psychological trauma experiences of psychiatric nurses as they are. van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research method, a type of phenomenology that reveals people's lives and experiences, focuses on insightful discovery and interpretation and is effective in revealing the essence of the experience inherent in the participants' language and culture and understanding its various meanings. Thus, this study applied van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research methods to explore psychological trauma experiences of psychiatric nurses and to understand their essence. The research question was, "What does the psychological trauma of a psychiatric nurse mean and what is its essence?" Participants were ten psychiatric nurses who had both working experience and psychological trauma in psychiatric units, and the researcher collected data through individual in-depth interviews over two months from July to August 2020. The researcher described personal experiences related to research phenomena and conducted an existential exploration by examining idiomatic phrases, literary works, and artworks. Subsequently, themes and essential themes were determined through hermeneutic phenomenological reflections, and hermeneutic phenomenological writing was finally done. This study revealed nineteen themes and five essential themes as psychological trauma experiences of psychiatric nurses: ‘Deeply wounded by shock,’ ‘Looking back on myself with a broken heart,’ ‘Looking around in fear,’ ‘Trying to treat and accept the wound,’ and ‘Overcoming difficulties and adapting to life.’ In this study, psychiatric nurses tried to reflect on themselves, overcome their wounds, look at the surrounding situation with a warm perspective and accept the experiences as part of their lives even though they experienced traumatic, intense, and chaotic psychological trauma. This study is meaningful in that it provides basic data to understand the psychological trauma experienced by psychiatric nurses, and it proposes an appropriate training and consultation for psychological trauma healing, hospital- and national-level intervention in the working environment, and further studies for more psychiatric nurses including men in various regions.
