Amidst the tumultuous changes that are shaking Korean culture as the 4th Industrial Revolution gains momentum, a marked shift is occurring in the collective conversation surrounding the future of the country’s education system. Many experts have posited a variety of opinions and solutions for reinventing Korean society and the role of education within it. However, the Korean education system is mired in traditional education methods that will be no small feat to deviate from. Calls for updated methods are heightening as people challenge a learning environment that values the score on an entrance exam above all else, negating the value of recognizing students’ personality and soft skills through a more holistic approach. This system exalts cramming and massed rote memorization over spaced, active learning. Its focal point is the teachers and administration, rather than the learners. Although unforeseeable changes are likely to emerge due to the current fluidity and uncertainty of the global crisis, this study aims to devise an educational plan with the 4th Industrial Revolution in mind. This thesis outlines an education plan and presents alternatives to this pressing issue. The technology of the 4th Industrial Revolution will bring disruptive innovation to the future society, bringing about changes like humanity has witnessed never before. In the future, many technologies will fuse and connect, allowing for greater interdisciplinary exchange between core technologies as well as physical, digital, and biological fields. This convergence of new technologies will have a direct impact on education. The education of the 4th Industrial Revolution Era, the innovative and varied technologies will be utilized in the educational field. Convergence, connection, and sharing will become commonplace within the education system, as well as between education and equipment and other industrial fields. Chapter II examines the beginnings and characteristics of the 4th industrial revolution through the analysis of the characteristics of the three prior industrial revolutions. The core technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution that will go on to lead the future of mankind have the ability to generate unprecedented levels of inter-connectivity in various fields. Due to this factor, an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of new core technologies, as well as their potential ripple effect, is critical to the accurate analysis of problems and proposal of alternative solutions. Technology in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution excels at creating new value by processing, analyzing, and using information and data. The goal of this thesis is not to present the perspectives and knowledge of experts in the fields pertaining to the physical, digital, and biological revolutions. Rather, since a basic understanding of the core technologies in each of these fields is necessary in order to respond effectively to the changes of the 4th industrial era, this analysis presents a schematic overview of the technology in each of the previously mentioned categories. The technologies of the physical industrial revolution include unmanned vehicles, drones, and 3D printing. The technologies of the digital industrial revolution include the Internet of Things and big data, block chain, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The technologies of the biological industrial revolution include biotechnology, genetic engineering and information ethics. In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, the three core technologies will be super-converged and super-combined to bring about innovative changes in human life as well as educational methods. In Chapter III, the 4th Industrial Revolution and social change are categorized into political/administrative aspects, economic aspects, social/cultural aspects, and ideological aspects. The political and administrative aspects are classified into the changing role of the government, participatory democracy and representative democracy. The economic aspect is classified as industrial structure and paradigm shift, the correlation between economic development and technological development, technology convergence and product innovation. The social and cultural aspects are categorized into changes in the media environment, social unrest due to employment insecurity, income redistribution problems and inequality. The ideological aspect was divided into the importance of convergence, connection, and union, the need for total capacity, individual freedom and pluralism, and the importance of imagination and creativity. Each item will then be analyzed and discussed. One of the defining traits of human beings is our creativity and imagination when given the freedom to cultivate those qualities based on communication, understanding and trust. At the center of the change of the 4th Industrial Revolution is an increased demand for people who are able to recognize patterns and interconnectivity between seemingly unrelated factors. In order to pursue the People-centered 4th Industrial Revolution, an educational foundation that fosters abundant imagination and creativity must be established. Chapter IV describes the educational ideology of the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, which is the primary focus of this paper. First, creative and aggregation skills, along with communication and collaboration skills, are presented as capabilities required for future society. In the change of future social education, the necessity of software education and education to increase overall competency are suggested. In preparation for future educational changes, reinforcement of universal education for liberal arts and character education, and education for autonomy and creativity are suggested. Finally, the task of future education, the role of higher education, methods of education, and environmental changes are presented. In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, schools will play a greater role in developing people that are innovative creators and learners. Although schools are, fundamentally, a place to acquire knowledge, they must also increasingly become a space where students can experience and develop ideas about their roles, rights, and duties as members of a social community. Therefore, schools should also play a role in exploring the concept that individual learners are human playing their assigned roles in the community, and what it means to function optimally together as an interdependent society. The future of education should recognize the importance of humanity, and value the development of character and sensibility by prioritizing the acknowledgement of shared humanity, rather than viewing students simply as vessels for facts and numbers, with little ability to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. This is because the development and progress of future technologies and the speed and direction of changes depend on humans’ thinking. And the future education of the 4th industrial revolution era requires respect amongst humans, acceptance of shared humanity, and the development of communication skills and collaboration. The era of the 4th Industrial Revolution will change from passive learning to active learning. The meaning of learning will also change to lifelong learning. In addition, it will transform into a somewhat more self-sufficient form than previous generations that were highly dependent upon their teachers in order to access new information. Non-face-to-face education, such as Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), will be possible regardless of time and place. The limited space of the classroom will be demolished, but schools that allow anyone to learn anytime, anywhere will compound rapidly. There are requirements of the educational competence in the 4th industrial revolution era. First, the ability to express one's thoughts autonomously and to think critically. Second, to possess complex problem-solving skills and creative collaboration skills that can encourage interconnectedness within cultures. Third, it is possible to present competence with humanities literacy and sensitivity while using digital tools freely. In particular, liberal arts and character education should be more emphasized. In regard to alternatives for the future of education, these three factors are crucial: first, the reinforcement of universal education for liberal arts and character education; second, the fostering of a need for software education; and finally, third, education of students to develop overall competence. Fourth, it can suggest autonomy and creativity education. Education policy that is not linked to national policy, social identity, industry, etc. will not succeed. The success or failure of the 4th Industrial Revolution will be directly related to the success or failure of education to pivot and evolve with the global changes taking place. When re-evaluating approaches to education, a Comprehensive educational policy should be established in close cooperation with all social areas. When an unshakable implementation plan for a new educational policy is established, Korea’s youth are provided greater means with which to think critically, grow holistically, innovate boldly, and contribute daringly to their communities.
