Netflix, the globally leading OTT service company, is a platform that provides content such as TV programs and movies to users with a variety of devices, anytime and anywhere through ultra-high-speed broadband Internet and mobile communication networks. As code-cutting of set-top boxes has become more common, the interaction of new media has expanded to an era of hyperconnectivity where videos can be streamed easily and quickly. Netflix started in Canada in 2010, and has been expanding its OTT service to 43 countries in 2011 and 190 including Korea in 2016 for globalization. As the untact situation prolongs, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that spread to the global village in 2020, the domestic and foreign online video service (OTT) market, including Netflix, is growing rapidly, and competition among global online video service platform companies is intensifying. Netflix has got more than 4 million Korean subscribers for the five years since launching in Korea in January 2016, and become a catalyst for establishing partnerships and integrated strategies to counter Netflix by launching a new OTT service called Wavve, which integrates Oksusu, a domestic OTT company, and Pooq of three terrestrial broadcasters, KBS, MBC, and SBS. Therefore, this study examines the globalization strategy and localization strategy of Netflix's OTT service, which has secured more than 240 million subscribers from about 190 countries around the world as of the second quarter of 2020. Through this study, we examine the survival strategies of Netflix, which monopolizes OTT streaming services, and domestic and foreign OTT service companies and also the ecosystem of the OTT market through both competition and collaboration, and then its problems and complements. In addition, through literature research and data analysis this study examines the process of Netflix, which lacks contents, to secure Korean contents through original, license, and resale. Netflix is producing its own original Korean content, including "Kingdom," starting with Bong Joon-ho's film "Okja" in 2017. Since entering Korea in January 2016, it has invested 770 billion won ($700 million) in the development of Korean original content until 2020. Netflix produced four original Korean dramas in 2019 (Kingdom et al.) and four in 2020 (Sweet Home et al.), and is preparing 20 (Squid Games et al. 19) in 2021. In order to secure Korean original dramas, Netflix monopolizes the Korean original contents market in various forms, such as production of Korean contents, licenses, copyright and IP (intellectual property), and shortening of holdback. According to data from Netflix, “Compared to 2019, the amount of Korean contents viewing increased about four times in Asia and about 2.5 times in North America and Europe, such as the United States, Canada, Portugal and Spain,” Netflix is taking Korea as a bridgehead to expand streaming of global OTT services, including Asia, by utilizing the excellence of Korean content and soft power of the Korean Wave. Since Netflix's original dramas, which entered Korea in 2016, are only 8 in total, 4 in 2019 and 4 in 2020, as of November 2021, we examine the distribution of 180 Korean dramas exposed on the main screen of Korean dramas on Internet Netflix by genre, year, and original work. In order for Korea's excellent content not to be subordinate to global OTT companies such as Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Amazon, it is necessary to find improvements. In addition, not only content producers but also the government should establish sustainable policies to increase the price competitiveness of Korean contents such as various services in the domestic OTT service market and high-quality content production, supply, investment, and environment. I hope this study will help the domestic OTT service industry develop.
