ABSTRACT The study aims to find out the difficulties that art therapists for children with developmental disabilities experience, and the qualities, difficulties, and limitation that they think of by analyzing their experiences with such children. It has the purpose of providing the basic data for future art therapists meeting children with developmental disabilities to get the proper qualities and mindset as therapists through the indirect experience at the clinical field. The participants of this study are those who are master’s degree or higher in art therapy, and 10 of them who have experiences for over 3 years in art therapy for children with developmental disabilities. I divided them into 2 groups and conducted the first and second times of the focus group interviews from October 2019 to February 2021. I collected data from the focus group interviews where the participants could talk about one subject, and the collected data went through the transcription process. In the phase of data analysis, I considered Phenomenological Research Methods as suitable which tends to emphasize on the subjects’ various responses to research phenomena, interpretation, interaction with others, and changes in vision. Among various Phenomenological Research Methods, I applied Giorgi’s methods that describe participants’ experience in depth through their words, and derive the essential elements from the experience. It resulted in the elements of art therapists’ motivation with 12 meaning units, 4 subcategories, and 2 upper categories, and in the elements of the experience with 43 meaning units, 14 subcategories, and 4 upper categories. The results of qualification and future of art therapists for children with developmental disabilities turned out to be 19 meaning units, 5 subcategories, and 2 upper categories. In overall, 74 meaning units, 23 subcategories and 8 supper categories were resulted. This study’s result has such contents of each factor as follows. First, the result about the motivation of art therapists were the fact that they found the effectiveness of the art therapy according to and started the art therapy for children with developmental disabilities, and also began involuntarily by provided circumstances. According to , they felt expectation and excitement to meet a new object in meeting children of developmental disabilities for the first time. On the other hand, they also experienced sense of doubt on the process and effect of the art therapy feeling unfamiliar and fearful since meeting the disabled children for the first time.
The results on the experience on the process of the therapy as an art therapist for developmentally disabled children are as follows. According to , they conduct the art therapy by focusing on the psychological aspect of the children, and emphasizing on the mental comfort and emotional expression, and also focusing on the behavior aspect and reducing the problematic behavior and preventing it. In , the participants seemed to acknowledge the importance of building rapport with the children’s parents, and they found out that the parents’ psychological change could affect their children in either positive or negative way. However, they also said they feel the pressure and limitation of capability as art therapists from the difficulties in consulting with parents. In , the therapists said they felt it is necessary to apply an effective way of therapy from the supervision and discussion on cases, and felt the limited capability of themselves from proceeding programs repeatedly. Also it was said they experience difficulties of the institution’s environment, system and its treatment, and the limitation as art therapists. From , the participants said it is important to build the rapport with the disabled children, and they felt the big responsibility through proceeding the art therapy. Besides that, they expressed it is rewarding to see the effect of the art therapy, and see when the parents accept their children’s disability well and communicate with them with stability. The therapists said it is particularly rewarding and relieving when they see the parents and their children take the therapy well and the family become much stabled as finishing the therapy. The results of the qualification and future of art therapists for children with developmental disabilities are as follows. In , the psychological stability and the maturity of art therapists is found to be the most fundamental, and the participants said they need to try to solve their difficulties by overcoming their own limitations. Moreover, they expressed it is important to get expertized through constant learning, and to encourage parents to live independently from their children in the parents consulting and coaching. In , the demands for the social status of the therapists and the secured livelihood, and expanded support for the developmentally disabled children are addressed. Also, they said it is crucial to create the manual of the process of the therapy and questions of it, the process of qualifications, study of the art therapists, and mentoring of the art therapists in order to enhance their professionalism. As above, the art therapists for developmentally disable children have different experience from previous art therapists’. The art therapist who has little experience with children with developmental disability feel hopeless and afraid of treating them, and have trouble to be sure of the therapy’s direction and its effectiveness. Also, they do not have enough background information of the disabled child and his family and experience with them, the therapists feel pressure in consulting with the parents as well as the treatment. Especially, they become questioning the factors of the art therapy’s effectiveness as proceeding each session, and realize the needs of establishing qualities as art therapists and of social system. The art therapists for developmentally disabled children need to possess the capability of the previous art therapists as well as the professionalism to understand the children and analyze them better. Suggestions through the above conclusions are as follows. First, it would give better understanding of the experience the therapists have when they have an in-depth interview on the limitations and difficulties they experience, and also when the meaning and nature of a person’s maturing as an art therapist are reviewed. Second, this study interviewed ten of the art therapists for children with development disabilities and reviewed their experiences. Therefore, the derivation of more data is needed through constant focus group study of the art therapists for the developmentally disabled children. Third, it is important to develop art therapy programs according to types of disabilities, and to research actively to analyze the factors of the effectiveness of the art therapy for the children. This study with the title of the experience of the art therapists for children with developmental disabilities has the meaning that the art therapy has various positive effect on such children, and the effort for their families, qualifications of the art therapists and the expectation for the future have been addressed in depth and understood. It is expected to give empathetic message to the art therapists treating the developmentally disabled children in clinical institutes, and also indirect influence of the actual experiences.
