This study began with interest in first-time teachers for one-year-olds amid the recent increased use of infant daycare centers and the rising expectations for the quality level of teachers. In order to understand in depth the meaning and experience of the first-time teachers, and the possibility of dynamic and variations that they undergo in the process of becoming a teacher, this study explores the process of becoming a first-time teacher for one-year-olds based on Deleuze's ontological perspective. In order to find out the experience of the first-time teachers and the variation and creation in the process, the definition of first-time teachers from a traditional perspective was questioned and looked upon from a different perspective. The newly redefined teachers were then categorized into the following groups: superficial first-time teachers who had just entered the teaching profession, potential first-time teachers who had only the experience of teaching infants, and cyclic first-time teachers who returned from a leave. This study explores, from an ontological point of view, the process of those newly categorized first-time teachers who become aware of their existential specificity, undergo repeated generations and variations, and signify their potentials through the process. Accordingly, the following research questions were established.
From an ontological point of view, how about becoming a teacher for a first-time teacher in a first-year class?
In preparation for this study, the first preliminary study were conducted in 2017 and the second preliminary study in 2018. Based on this, data were collected from the third week of April 2020 to the last week of September 2020, during which it was assumed that most of the infants in daycare centers had adapted to their environments. Participants in the study consisted of four superficial first-time teachers, three potential first-time teachers, and three cyclic first-time teachers, excluding those who had participated in the preliminary study. The main data for the study were generated through two to three in-depth interviews with each of the first-time teachers. Based on semi-structured interview questions, the interviews revolved around the teachers' stories and feeling expressed naturally and the teachers' journals, logs, and researcher diaries were also collected. The collected data were analyzed from Deleuze's ontological point of view with focus on the teachers' potential power, generations, and variations revealed through their connection with all beings, symbols, and time surrounding them. As a result, the first-time teachers entered a new phrase of life when they started teaching one-year-olds, creating new meanings and redefining time through their connection with time, other beings and their symbols in multiple dimensions. The results of exploring the process of becoming a first-time teacher of one-year-olds from an ontological point of view are as follows: First, the first-time teachers began their career of teacing one-year-olds with memories of different territorial experiences but from similar backgrouds. They were both exicted and anxious about the future based on each of their own experiences. Second, as the first-time teachers developed intertwined relationship with other beings as they entered the common experience of teaching one-year-olds. As they connected with one-year-old infants, they shared a common experience of breaking away from the linear flow of their career regardless of their previous territorial experiences. Through the intertwined relationship with their colleagues and the infants’ parents, the first-time teachers started to become aware of their other selves different. Third, in the complex, intertwined Lysomic space of one-year-old class, the first-time teachers discoverd differences from their previous phase of life. They were able to feel the subtle differences that had not been felt previously and this ability that began to awaken led the first-time teachers to listen to their inner selves. Fourth, the first-time teachers who began to feel their latent selves strived to rely on reason during their process of becoming teachers. Eventually, they were able to become independent after breaking away from the invisible fence that had surrounded them. Fifth, first-time teachers created new dynamics and selves as they transformed through their relationship with other beings with whom they connected, separated and resonated. The first-time teachers, who realized their existential meaning, were no longer afraid of escapes, but were breaking boundaries by choosing a nomadic lifestyle on their own terms. In this ontological flow of becoming a teacher, superficial, potential, and cyclic first-time teachers existed as separate flows within each category, anfd also revealed their common grounds built on the same experience and thought. This tangled flow of unity and separation, which began with the teachers’ worries about themselves and about the world eventually evolved into repeated and gradual reflection, took place throughout the entire ontological process of becoming a teacher. The recurrent reflection of the first-time teachers developed from fragmentary rumination into lysomorphic reflection that implies complex, multi-dimensional dynamics of creation through their relationships with other beings. The discussion points these research results can be summarized as follows: First, the three groups of first-time teachers who had been staying in their own territorial zones entered the common ground of one-year-old class and started connecting with different beings. While they shared the experience of teaching one-year-olds, they all had a hard time understanding the one-year-old infants. However, their previous life experiences that had already been territorialized developed into different deficiencies and desires. The superficial first-time teacher showed willingness to reveal his or her competence, the potential first-time teacher showed tendency to ponder childcare methods for infants and children, and the cyclic first-time teacher showed desire to understand the changing childcare process. Therefore, in order to support first-time teachers with different backgrounds and experiences, specific discussions are needed on teacher education that is customized based on the understanding of the teachers’ different backgrounds. Second, as their identity changed while teaching one-year-olds, the first-time teachers found themselves different from before. They used to live as compliant beings who followed the path of experienced teachers, but now they were generating affection and interest through accidental encounters in their daily lives. This change helped the first-time teachers to listen to their inner selves and gradually reveal the potential that had been suppressed. Therefore, in order for first-time teachers to restore and reveal their potential competencies, the culture in the childcare field must change into an embracing one. Third, when they first started teaching one-year-olds, the first-time teachers felt discouraged and experienced difficulties in their intertwined relationships with other beings. However, as they gradually transformed into beings with conservative inertia, they experienced recovery, growth, and cooperation based on their understanding of and sensitivity to other beings. Resonance with other beings experienced by the first-time teachers served as a driving force in creating yet other differences. Therefore, in order for first-time teachers to be open to other beings and to interact with them, a place for active communication such as a learning community or a childcare community is needed. Fourth, the boundary between the researcher and the participants became blurred as the researcher participated in becoming a teacher with the participants from an ontological perspective. At the same time, the first-time teachers learned and grew through their experience with infants and, by doing so, tore down the traditional notion of teachers helping infants and infants receiving help from teachers. Therefore, researchers should be nomads who create differences by studying research topics and research participants based on existential meaning, away from the conventional framework. This study is meaningful in that the existential meaning and experience of the first-time teachers of one-year-olds and their process of becoming teachers are viewed from an ontological point of view, not from the existing traditional point of view, and that its meaning is newly constructed. From an ontological point of view, the first-time teachers were connecting with other beings based on their own potential capabilities and experiencing changes and dynamics through constant reflection and interaction. Therefore, in the future, it is necessary to dismantle the perspective used in the traditional studies and seek ways to support the teachers’ development though a new lens. Therefore, this study implies the need for educational support that accepts the teachers’ existential meaning, not for the generic, introductory education that was conventionally conducted.
