This study aims to understand how the New Hanbok fashion of K-Pop idol groups is recognized as the center of global popular culture, and to review how the visual concept of K-Pop idol groups’ and New Hanbok fashion are combined and expressed through diversity in fashion and beauty styling. As an extension, the study shall analyze cases of New Hanbok fashion and beauty styling through non-contact online stage performances of K-Pop idol groups from a new perspective that takes into account both Korean traditional culture and K-Pop's pop culture. The study subjects are the third and fourth generation K-Pop idol groups of the 5 teams composed of either all male, all female, or mixed such as BTS, BLACKPINK, ATEEZ, OH MY GIRL, and KARD. All of these idol groups wore stage costumes produced by New Hanbok fashion designers sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, catapulting Hanbok into ‘hip’ idol fashion attire, far from the staid traditional image at a time when non-contact online stage performances were becoming the norm worldwide in 2020 and 2021. The research methodology involved the review of documentation and case analysis, both relevant to the purpose of the study. First of all, visual concepts that have been instrumental in determining the direction of fashion and beauty styling of K-Pop idol groups and the aesthetic characteristics that define the Korean image of New Hanbok fashion as modern fashion are examined in a separate context. Secondly, focusing on the fact that K-Pop idol groups New Hanbok fashion is a new reinterpretation of Hanbok, as well as the reflection of the idol groups’ visual concepts, the aesthetic characteristics that underline the Korean image have been categorized into traditional beauty, natural beauty, personality beauty, symbolic beauty, and convergence beauty. The conclusions of this study show that the New Hanbok fashion and beauty styling of K-Pop idol groups have been instrumental in expressing the ever-evolving Korean image of K-Heritage in the era of Hallyu 4.0. In addition, the K-Pop idol groups’ New Hanbok fashion and beauty styling which is the subject of immense support by the growing global fandom, as the focal point in Taste community of the MZ generation, is becoming the central axis in Korea's growing ‘soft power’, spearheading the expansion of K-Culture in the global scene.
