The present study investigated the effects of blended extensive reading (ER) programs on learners’ cognitive and affective domains and perceptions. It also examines the impact of reading volume on learners' cognitive and affective domains, and their attitudes towards teacher-guided and self-directed ER programs. The study was conducted with 128 nursing students from a college in Seoul, who were enrolled in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. Participants were divided into three groups: Experimental Group A (Teacher-guided, 42), Experimental Group B (Self-directed, 41), and Control Group C (45). The students, with a male to female ratio of 20% to 80%, ranged from low-intermediate to intermediate in terms of linguistic proficiency. Participants' reading levels were ascertained through pre-tests, including the TOEIC Reading Comprehension (RC) test and the Accelerated Reader (AR) Star Reading Test program. The study found that both teacher-guided and self-directed extensive reading programs significantly enhanced L2 reading proficiency and fluency and reading motivation. Improvements in TOEIC RC, AR, Reading Speed, Reading Speed Comprehension scores, Reading Efficacy, Challenge and Curiosity were observed, highlighting the influential role of extensive reading with proper guidance and self-direction. Further, the research demonstrated an increased reading amount to be directly associated with enhanced TOEIC RC and AR scores, Reading Speed and its Comprehension, and elements of Reading Motivation. Notably, learners' perceptions, both cognitive and affective, were positively impacted by the increased reading volume. Participants' attitudes and perceptions towards extensive reading were investigated. Significant positive shifts in cognitive abilities related to reading were noted in both teacher-guided and self-directed groups. Similarly, the program impacted the affective domain positively, leading to an improved attitude towards reading. Research observations and participant interviews highlighted the need for personalized learning environments, diverse reading materials, and supportive frameworks. Though the program successfully boosted participants' confidence, reading speed, and engagement, it underscored the necessity for more flexibility in design and a balanced approach between online and offline reading. In conclusion, while acknowledging individual differences and external factors, this study validates the multifaceted impacts of extensive reading on enhancing L2 learning outcomes and offers methods and insights for teaching and learning practices in L2 reading contexts. Therefore, it is expected to provide meaningful assistance in the practical application of extensive reading in the EFL Korean college situation.
