인간의 삶의 질에 관심을 두고 사회변화를 추구하는 연구자나 정책입안자들은 이러한 억압적 요소들에 주목해야 하는 이유는 무엇인가? 생산시장과 소비시장이 세계화되고 자본은 고도로 집중되는 현재 시기에 젊은이들의 일자리가 거시경제적 환경의 영향을 받는 것은 물론이고, 이들이 꾸릴 가정도 안식처나 휴식처가 아니라 당대가 생존하기 위한 전략센터요, 자녀를 경쟁력 있는 노동자로 키우기 위한 전략센터가 되고 있다. 그런데 개인 혹은 개별 가정의 선택은 언제나 주체적이고 자발적인 것이라고 생각되기 쉬우나, 결혼과 일상적 가정생활에 관한 지속적 선택은 이미 거시적 차원에서 구조화된 특정 환경 속에서 이루어지기 때문에 그 자체로 많은 억압적인 요소들을 포함할 수밖에 없다. 따라서 인간의 삶의 질에 관심을 두고 사회변화를 추구하는 연구자나 정책입안자들은 이러한 억압적 요소들에 주목해야 한다.
