삶에서 말하는 탄력성이란? 즉 탄력성은 ‘다시 되돌아오는 경향’, ‘회복력’, ‘탄성’으로서 역경이나 어려움속에서 그 기능 수행을 다시 회복할 수 있는 능력(Garmezy, 1993)이다. 삶에서 겪는 스트레스, 외상, 위험에서 회복하는 방식’(Henderson & Milstein, 1996)으로 ‘역경을 성장의 경험으로 전환하고 앞으로 더 나아가는 능력’(Polk, 1997)이며 '변화와 스트레스 사건에 대하여 건강하고 융통성 있게 적응할 수 있는 능력’(Taub & Pearrow, 2006)이다. 따라서 아동의 삶에서 위험과 스트레스를 제거하지는 않지만 효과적으로 다룰 수 있게 해주는 완충과정의 최종산물로(Rutter, 1987), 유아가 위험과 역경에 처해 있든 그렇지 않든 정서, 행동, 학업, 인간관계를 잘 이룰 수 있는 수단이다.
탄력성이란? 탄력성의 사전적 의미는 ‘튀기는 힘이 있는 성질’ 혹은 ‘상황에 따라서 알맞게 대처하는 성질’이다 (MinJungserim Editorial, 2011). 즉 탄력성은 ‘다시 되돌아오는 경향’, ‘회복력’, ‘탄성’으로서 역경이나 어려움속에서 그 기능 수행을 다시 회복할 수 있는 능력(Garmezy, 1993)이다.
