미국에서 받아들여지고 있는 과학적 소양 능력의 의미는 무엇인가? | 이처럼 현대 사회를 살아가는 일반 시민들에게 일상생활과 관련된 쟁점들과 대중매체의 과학 정보에 관한 토론에 비판적으로 참여하는 능력이 과학적 소양 능력의 의미(DeBoer, 2000; Elliot, 2006; McClune & Jarman, 2010; Norriss & Phillips, 2003)로 여겨짐에 따라 과학 교육과정에서도 이와 같은 의미로 과학적 소양 능력을 제시하고 있다. 미국 교육과정에서는 과학적 소양의 의미가 대중매체의 과학에 관한 기사 내용을 이해하면서 읽을 수 있는 능력과 결론의 타당성에 관한 사회적 대화에 참여할 수 있는 능력이라 하였고(NRC, 1996), 영국의 교육과정 지침에 관한 보고서에서 Millar & Osborn(1998)은 과학에 관한 간단한 신문 기사 내용을 읽고 이해할 수 있도록 교육과정에서 안내되어야 한다고 제안하였으며, 과학 교육의 역사를 고찰한 DeBoer(2000)는 일상생활과 관련된 쟁점들과 대중매체에서 보고되는 과학에 관한 정보와 토론을 비판적으로 수용할 수 있는 시민을 기르는 것이 과학적 소양 함양을 위한 하나의 과학 교육의 목표라 함으로써 현대 사회에서 과학적 소양의 의미를 밝히고 있다. 과학적 소양을 기르기 위해서 학교 과학 수업에서 과학과 관련된 쟁점들에 대한 논의 기회가 요구된다(Millar, 2006)는 주장 또한 사회적 쟁점에 대한 비판적 이해가 과학적 소양의 모습을 나타낸다고 할 수 있다. |
