우리 민족의 육식(肉食) 문화가 원나라가 일본 침략을 위해 고려를 병참기지로 정하기 이전까지 평탄치 않았던 이유는? 하지만 우리민족의 육식(肉食) 문화는 평탄치만은 않았다. 고구려 소수림왕 2년(372)년에 불교의 전래 이후로 육식은 금기사항이 되었다. 고려왕조 또한 불교를 국교로 삼았기 때문에 살생금지를 위해 소 도축금지령인 우금령(牛禁令)을 여러 번 내렸다. 「Goryeosajeolyo (고려사절요, 高麗史節要)」 의 기록에 의하면 광종 19년(968) 도축금지령을 필두로 하여 문종 20년(1066)은 3년간이나 도축을 금하였다. 또 예종 2년(1107)에도 살생을 금하였다. 그 후에도 충숙왕 12년(1325)년과 공민왕 11년(1362)에 농우 보호를 위하여 금살도감(禁殺都監)을 설치하였다(National Culture Promotion ed. 2004).
